I'm having a strange problem with my Samsung 2232 LCD monitor... I've had it for 2 years with no problems before.

I have eliminated O/S or Video card sources...

Problem started within the last few weeks while I was running Vista Ultimate and continues now that I'm running Win 7 pro. So not O/S problem.

I swapped out Video cards (and drivers) last night.. same problem... so not Video card or driver problem.

OK.. This is the issue:

When I COLD Boot( and only on Cold boot) my Monitor screen doesn't show any picture.. stays black like it isn't getting a signal.

But after a while the screen starts to flicker and a picture develops... I would miss the whole DOS Boot sequence.. and finally see the windows logo.... at least this was happenning until a few days ago... then I wouldn't see even the logo just the desktop... and now on Boot finally nothing... unless I turn the monitor power off.. and then back on... then the screen would appear. First with a lot of flickering.. then the Desktop appears..

This ONLY happens on Cold Boot... Restarts are no problem! I see everything.. Computer is on all night.. no problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Or do you know where the Samsung service for Monitiors is located??? Not all service centers handle all products.

Thanks,

CS

Have you tried the monitor on a different computer? I ask because I recently had an HP PC fail with similar systems. At first moving vga connection was enough to start display but finally nothing seemed to help and tried on-board vga which showed up one time and then never again. I do not know what was wrong but monitor works fine on other computers so expect was a problem on MB. Like you never had a problem running 24 hours a day but a cold boot killed it - but unlike you was as if the wake up signal was not getting to monitor and did not seem to resolve itself without moving cables around.

It does seem like Wake-up isn't getting to the Monitor... Or like it is whispering when It sould be SHOUTING.. just not enough juice until the Full desktop is loaded.. Then by Closing the monitor for 10 seconds and then opening it again.. There it is... Ready to go.

I'd really like to deal with this before it goes all the way... But if I bring it into Samsung service I'll probably lose it for a week or more anyway.... and not knowing anyone with a spare monitor, I'll probably have to bite the bullet and buy a small unit that I can use as a second screen after this one get repaired.. A Bonus.. But the budget is breaking this month.. and I can't hide another Monitor from my wife as easily as another harddrive..

I'm Dead Meat,

It is likely not to be the monitor - your menu works and if you hook up to another computer and it works normally you can rule the monitor out as being the problem. In my case it was the computer and expect in your case it is also.

I havn't tried it on another computer.. don't have another one handy to try it on. Nor do I have another monitor to test the Computer... But doesn't Seem to be the computer.. at least I eliminated the O/S and Video card.. so what else could it be??? maybe the cable ???

from what i have been reading

doesnt look like aging crystals but more of a component failure in the LCD.

since u ruled out video card , OS its more than likely the LCD itself.

The monitor works - he has menu display - the only thing not tested is the input cable/settings and using another computer will rule that out. As he seems not have have any display during boot it does not seem to be driver/resolution settings. I fear it may be the mother board.

Do you have a digital and analogue inputs on the monitor? if you do and the same on the GPU you could trying changing the cable to see if it helps.

I was at Pantip today, and dropped in on the Samsung Service Center on the 4th Floor, in the front.

After explaining my problem, the service manager said that to him it sounded like the monitor, and that I should bring it in.

Worried about losing my computer he said that they could check it over within an hour, and if something was wrong, fix it immediadetly, providing they have the part in stock. Otherwise it may take 3-4 days.

I can't talk from expierence yet, but I will bring it in next weekend.. If I can be in and out with my warrenty serviced problem solved in the promised hour, that will make Samsung the best IT company in Thailand for service.

I post the results next weekend.

Here is the final Update.... Brought the Monitor down to Samsung service on 4th Floor of Pantip....

They took it into the back immediately, and with 30 minutes, I had it back.... and outta there!!!

Final judgement > A Bad "power supply" in the monitor!

Not Computer... Not Video Card... Not O/S... Not Cable....

But a 30 minute Warrenty fix.. swap out part and home before I even had a chance to get hungry.

Kudos to Samsung Service!

My 2 year old LCD went on the blink a few days ago (probably because its on practically all the time), having had a look here I went down to Pantip and they replaced the main board in less than 20 mins. It was still under warranty to my surprise, so fixed free of charge. They even gave it a good clean before returning it. Given customer service is kinda lame in Thailand I have nothing but good words for those people at Samsung. Given this experience I wouldn't hesitate to buy their stuff again.

had something similar on Acer Service center.

they needed 3 days to check, than they called and told the spare part is not available anymore, if the next newer model with the same size would be also OK.

yes...I went home with a new monitor :)

I've had power supply in my PC before and I was just amazed at how erratic the machine became. You'd think digital stuff would either be on or off, but if there isn't enough power they behave in some very strange ways (dare I say 'analogue').

We had a few Acer LCDs go up at work. At least they left you in no doubt what was wrong - the blank screen, cloud of smoke and slightly melted plastic...
