The photo was taken by a Nation reporter who is accompanying him on the plane to Bangkok. Rakesh Saxena is expected to land at the Suvarnabhumi Airport shortly after 9 pm, ending one of the longest extradition battles. We have a reporter on the same plane, so please stay tuned with us for constantly updated coverage of an arrival that will surely add more spice to the already boiling hot local politics. Police Hospital prepares VIP room for Saxena The Police Hospital has prepared a VIP room for providing medical checkup and healthcare for fugitive Rakesh Saxena once he arrives Thailand Friday night. Pol Maj Gen Atthaphan Promtharat, deputy director of the hospital, said a medical team will go to the Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 7 pm to wait for Saxena. The fugitive, who has been extradited from Canada, is scheduled to arrive at the airport at 9 pm. Atthaphan said Saxena is partially paralyzed and has other chronic health problems. Saxena to be taken for questioning at CSD after landing Police hospital prepares a room to check health conditions of Rakesh Saxena, who is extradited from Canada to face charges of embezzlement in Thailand. Saxena is on wheelchair after suffering from a stroke. Fugitive Rakesh Saxena will be taken from the Suvarnabhumi International Airport to the Crime Suppression Division for questioning, the police spokesman said Friday. Pol Lt Gen Pongsaphat Pongchanroen said Saxena will arrive on Thai Airways International's Flight TG645 at 9:30 pm. Police will take him out of the airport through a special channel and will take him to the CSD. What is wrong with the court system in Canada?! This guy must have run to Canada with millions of dollars. Must have been able to pay some good attorneys and maybe some judges. Maybe in the court of public opinion, but not in the court of law. Thaksin's charges must be fairly light if he only got a two year sentence. This guy is accused of embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars from a public company. Thats got to be at least 10 years. Plus it sounds like he's on his death bed anyway, sick as hel_l. Where does it say anything about that? They are talking about the Police HOSPITAL in Pathum Wan, Bangkok which is a public hospital but run under police care and administration. "There is no cause for concern because everything will proceed in accordance with evidence," he said. Abhisit said the prosecution of the Indian-born financier Rakesh Saxena would be based on the rule of law, freed from political meddling. The government will not play a political game in connection with the fraud case in 1996, Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban meanwhile echoed his boss. Saxena, in Thai custody following the successful extradition hearing in Canada, has boasted of having political contacts with the defunct faction known as the Group of 16, which has morphed into various coalition cliques, including the Newin Chidchob faction. Trouble Posted October 30, 2009 Share Posted October 30, 2009 Thanks for posting the information from Wikipedia. Seems to me that lots of accusations but little evidence to back up those accusations. Probably some of the reason for the lengthly process through the Canadian court system. It will be interesting to see if the Thai authorities can link funds transfers from the Commerce Bank of BKK to Saxena. My bet is if it was done it was thru investments, ,loans, stock transactions and all sorts of other vehicles which were risky business practices for the bank to begin with. If as it seems, this guy has been able to keep from being convicted elsewhere, he will only get convicted in Thailand because of pressure of political elite and judges who seem indifferent to evidence, required in other countries, to prove guilt or innocence. Seems he was an "advisor" to a bank vice president. I am not necessarily thinking of his guilt or innocence, however 14 years have passed since the bank's failure and it will be interesting to see what evidence the Thai authorities put forth in order to get this guy convicted. As a side note, I once met Adnan Khashoggi (one of the people listed in the Wikipedia article) and have been in awe of the ability of some of these money people to wheel and deal. At the time Khashoggi was involved with being a middle man between Lockheed and others trying to sell planes to Saudi Arabia. All involved kickbacks to already wealthy people so they would influence purchases from the "right" company. Extremely interesting stuff and reads like a novel.
