Usually, the airlines want to see the passenger have a return ticket or a visa when boarding for an international flight. A Tourist Visa would allow a stay of upto 60 days, and could be extended for an additional 30 days for 1900 Baht. Currently there isn't a fee for Tourist Visas and there is an Honorary Consul in Perth.

Without an onward ticket within 30 days he may not be allowed on the flight without a Visa.

Apply for a Tourist Visa in Perth. They are free of charge until March.

First, there are no 30 days visas for Thailand as the 30 days actually is a permission to stay in the country without a visa, i.e. visa exempt.

The best choice for your son is to apply for a tourist visa at the nearest Thai consulate. The tourist visas are currently free of charge. He can apply for a single or a multiple entry visa. Upon arrival he will be granted 60 days permission to stay and his stay can also be extended for another 30 days at an immigration office. The cost for the extension is currently 1,900 baht.

If his visa is with a multiple entry he could simply cross the border and return and be granted another 60 days stay.

With regards to your question of arriving with a one way ticket this is in fact purely an airline issue. However, without a proper visa (the 30 day route) it is most likely that he will be denied boarding whereas if he possesses a proper visa (in this case a tourist visa) he can arrive on a one way ticket.

"He can apply for a single or a multiple entry visa."

As long as you're going for technical accuracy...

Tourist visas are not issued as multiple entry visas, as we commonly know them. Multiple entry normally refers to an unlimited number of entries. Tourist visas are issued with a set number of entries, such as 1,2 or 3 entries.

Other than that, I agree with the advice given.

Sometimes the accuracy of the vocab matters, sometimes it doesn't.

thanks for the help , if he came on the normal 30day tourist visit , could we apply for a 30 or 60 day tourist visa once here , the problem is we are not sure how long he may stay ..

He can get 7 day extension on a 30 day 'visa exempt' entry with ticket out of the country within that time period. Otherwise a border run would give new 'visa exempt' permission to stay; 15 days if entry at land crossing or 30 days if arriving by air. Or if needs longer obtain a visa from consulate in neighbouring country. Vientiane currently issuing double entry tourist visa free of charge which with extensions and border run in the middle will give nearly 6 months stay. But, as said, best plan at the start would be to obtain free 60 day tourist visa before travelling (which can be extended for further 30 days at Thai immigration if required).

There is a good chance he will never get on the plane without a real tourist visa as he evidently will not have a return ticket within 30 days. Have him get a free tourist visa - that provides 60 days on entry and can be extended another 30 days.
