Thai man arrest for spying in Cambodia

By Xinhua

Cambodian Police Authority has arrested a Thai engineer for allegedly spying for Thailand and sent him to court, police official said on Friday.

"We have already sent him to court and the court will deal with this issue," Kieth Chantharith, spokesman for Cambodia National Police Authority told Xinhua. But he did not elaborate in details about these issues.

The Thai man named Siwarak Chothipong in Khmer, 31, worked as aengineer in CATS, was arrested on Wednesday according to the arrest warrant of prosecutor of Phnom Penh Municipality Court, the Khmer language newspaper Rasmei Kampuchea reported.

He spied through copying the letters of flights of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Cambodia and Prime Minister Hun Sen from CATS - Cambodia Air Traffic Services Co Ltd which has duties to control all flights in country...and he sent those reports to Thailand, the newspaper said.

"We decided to charge this Thai citizen and his subordinates of doing things which affected the public security of the country," Sok Roeurn, prosecutor of Phnom Penh court was quoted as saying.

Relations between the two neighboring countries were further strained recently after Cambodia named Thaksin as its economic adviser on Nov. 4. Thailand recalled its ambassador on Nov. 5, and Cambodia followed suit.

Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 military coup for alleged massive corruption and other charges. His supporters say he should be pardoned and returned to power. Since the coup, Thaksin has lived abroad to escape a corruption conviction and two-year prison sentence.

Thaksin arrived here on Tuesday. After his arrival, Thai government asked Cambodia for "provisional arrest for the purpose of extradition of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, but was turned down by the Cambodian government saying it 'considers the prosecution and legal process against Thaksin Shinawatra a politically motivated proceeding."

Well at least the Cambodians are charging non-Cambodians. Here in LOS they charge their own people under the all encompassing "national security"

It's getting like a watered down version of North Korea.

Jatuporn alleges Thai govt interfered in Cambodian domestic affairs by seeking Thaksin's flight schedule

Pheu Thai Party MP Jatuporn Promphan Friday alleged that the Abhisit Government had interfered in the domestic affairs of Cambodia by seeking the flight schedule of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's private jet.

Jatuporn said the Cambodian government expelled the first secretary of the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh because the government tried to seek the flight schedule of Thaksin.

"This was a severe breach of diplomatic protocol as Thaksin's jet is a private one. The Thai government interfered in the domestic affairs of Cambodia by seeking the flight schedule," Jatuporn said.

Yeah and Hun Sen interferred in Thai internal affairs in a breach of protocol by appointing an ex-PM found guilty in a Thai court and w#sought for extradition to a Cambodian government position.

Isnt Jatuporn undermining the engineer arrewsted by saying this by the way. He hasnt even been to court yet and whether he will get a fair trial in Cambodia is open to question. The politicking goes on.

So why not just deny the request? Hardly espionage.

I wonder if his contact/handler was the 1st Secretary of the Royal Thai Embassy in Cambodia.

Would seem from the second quote from The Nation that you were spot-on!

To me it looks as if this Government is slowly losing their marbles over this spat, what will be the next daft caper of Abhisit and his bunch of clowns?

Funny to see how everyone assumes that what Hun Sen and Cambodia says is accurte and true and what Thailand says and Abhisit says is wrong. I would adviuse caution in believing what is said right now. In all inter-nation disputes tit for tat expulsions are made and allegations of spying occur. there are three US citizens currently held in Iran for spying. Do we believe that they are guilty before even being tried?

People should think a little about the guy locked up in jail now. He could well just be a victim of poltical shananigans. At least one of all the MPs attending Hun Sens dinner party could at least go to see him, and maybe even ask for his immediate release/deportation/expulsion.

There is a human level to this apart from the idiotic games.

It seems that Some are distrusting anything said in the News (especially from The Nation)...unless it comes from the Red camp, then the allegations must be true. And the reporting spot on.

Distrusting.. probably yes. As opposed to 'trusting'. How can you not be very critical just reading the stuff they churn out every day? However will judge everything on merit, after weighing it with independent as well as opposing news sources.

The temperature goes up a notch.

It is hard to believe that there won't be some sort of action from either the government or the PAD.

ASTV must be going ballistic about this story. It doesn't matter if it is true or not. Lest we forget the Times article causing a response somewhere about 7 on the richter scale. No one even bothers anymore to check if anything is true. The temperature is that high and the flow of info so fast, that the emotional reaction is enough.

This will be all over the news tonight, in the papers tomorrow. Maybe by Tuesday, if the PAD haven't stormed to the border in the meantime, someone might discover that this may have been a load of BS.

I doubt it is BS, and more fool the Thai embassy for thinking that they could simply call CATS and get someone to send a fax of the documents over. That is idiot espionage.

DETERIORATING TIES

Cambodia's arrest of Thai is intimidation : Thai FM

By The Nation

Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya said on Friday that Cambodia's arrest of a Thai engineer on spying charges is nothing more than intimidation with the intention to defame Thailand.

Cambodia has charged Siwarak Chothipong, an engineer of Cambodia Air Traffic Services, for "stealing" the flight information of ex-Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodia's PM Hun Sen.

Cambodian prosecutors alleged that Siwarak stole the information and sent it to Thai embassy's first secretary Kamrob Palawatwichai.

Cambodia on Thursday expelled Kamrob following the accusation that he had executed work in contradiction to his position. He was ordered to leave the country within 48 hours.

"It is clearly intimidation with intent to defame Thailand by Cambodia," said Kasit, who cut short his participation in ministerial preparatory meetings for the Apec Summit in Singapore.

He accused Thaksin of being the major cause of all the problems Thailand having with Cambodia.

He said he had assigned officials of Thai embassy in Phnom Penh to assist and provide legal advice to Siwarak.

Cambodia's appointment of Thaksin as the adviser to Hun Sen and his government has seen the start of the current diplomatic rows between the neighbouring countries. Both have recalled their ambassadors and the first secretaries. Thailand has downgraded relations and reviewed cooperation with and loans given to Cambodia.

Next Thailand will arrest the little Cambodia beggar boys in the neighborhood....oh no, then they would have to take care of them.

I would expect that there will be more of this stuff and ordinary people on both sides of the border might want to tread carefully for the time being.

How can you trust The Nation without using your critical faculties? Just this morning they reported that the Cambodian Embassy was in Phnom Penh instead of Bangkok. Admittedly, on occasion, they have got a story straight. But, as with any news source, especially out of a censored country such as Thailand, the rule is READER BEWARE!

Jatuporn is one pathetic little maggot. Nary a word from him this entire week in regards to the diplomatic row. Suddenly, a Thai citizen is arrested and charged with spying, and right away he defends not a Thai citizen, but defends Cambodia's actions since his very own government, which he is part of, has allegedly interfered with Cambodia's affairs. Nevermind that Cambodia has done it's fair share of interference into Thailand's affairs. The silence from him and the PPT this week say's a lot about their very nature. They have, sadly, betrayed their nation and her people.

Ditto Cambodia

On other things clearly Hun Sen is seeking a massive overreaction by Thailand and before the APEC meet to utterly discredit the country. Hun Sen clearly isnt worried about Cambodia's international image. His international alliances arent with countries sensitive of such things whilke Thailand's are a lot closer to countries that do ghet sensitive to diplomatic faux pas. Clearly Abhisit will not want to overreact before the meet but will he be able to hold back others? After the meet if it goes that long I would expect Thailand to retaliate and maybe ferociously.

I suppose to point was to advanced for you guys.

Indeed, how can we trust them or any other publication right off the bat?

So why are so many posters doing it above?

I'll tell you why some of the more critical posters from the red camp take the story written as gospel: since it sang to their quire.

Just pointing out some inconsistencies in some peoples approach here.
