george Posted April 10, 2005 Posted April 10, 2005 Phuket shows determination to beat drink driving PHUKET: -- Thailand's southern resort island of Phuket today demonstrated its commitment to beat drink driving over the forthcoming Songkran vacation period by sending four motorists accused of drink driving to court. The island province is taking the problems of drink driving seriously this year, with more than 400 police officers manning eight checkpoints since last night, when officers noted 171 traffic offenders, of whom four have been accused of drink driving. Mr. Winai Buapradit, deputy director of the centre established to reduce traffic deaths over the Songkran period, said that the four would be taken to court. Since the checkpoints were established last night, the island has recorded 27 road accidents involving 31 injuries. Mr. Winai said that officers manning the checkpoints had inspected a total of 1,960 vehicles, the majority of them motorcycles. Most were examined to help prevent terrorist attacks, he said, noting that southern insurgents tended to use motorcycles as their preferred choice of vehicle. --TNA 2005-04-10
