Country's first survey of penis sizes launched as part campaign for safe sex

Size does count!

The disposable paper measurement tape used to measure the width of penis. The scale given at 49-52-53-54-56 millimeters, is based on a standard of penis width of Thai men. Please note an instruction: "Please measure during erection" and "Pull the tape"

BANGKOK: -- Men's instinctive concern over their penis size will soon be discussed more openly - or even boasted about - with the news that an official penis measuring device is being introduced to Thailand. About to be launched under the Public Health Ministry's "Condom for All" campaign, a disposable paper measuring tape will tell guys which size condom will give them the best comfort and protection.

Measuring tape

The tape records widths of between 49 and 56 millimetres - covering the "Thaipenissize standard", said Dr Somyos Kittimankhong of the Department of Disease Control's (DDC) antiAids division. He did not mention how men with smaller or larger sized members could take part in his department's upcoming survey of Thai penis size.

Spike in HIV infections

The campaign was launched in response a spike in the number of gay men and sex workers contracting HIV. A Bt200million budget has been approved for a countrywide drive to give away free condoms to gay men and males and females aged 1525, with a special focus on ensuring that people wear the rightsize protection.

Creating condoms that fit

"Largersize condoms can slip off or deaden the pleasure during sex, while smaller ones will cause discomfort to wearers. These factors dissuade people from using condoms - which encourages the spread of HIV/Aids," said Somyos.

"Making goodfitting condoms available will be useful in dealing with the reemerging HIV/Aids problem as well as promoting the widespread practice of safe sex in Thailand," he said.

The DDC's statistics showed that HIV infection rates among gay men going for testing were 17 per cent in 2003, 28 per cent in 2005 and 32 per cent in 2007, a rise that has prompted warnings of a second wave of HIV/Aids infection. The campaign is aimed at cutting infection rates in half by 2011.

Once approved, more than 7,000 tambon administrations will be asked to participate in promoting the practice of safe sex and in distributing the free condoms.

"The tape records widths of between 49 and 56 millimetres"

I first thought that scale is diameter, but after looking on our caliper I doubt that. Thai men would be monster.

Than I took the size /3.14: 56/3.14=17.8 mm that looks too small.

What mistake did I made???

I am glad to see this topic as I have had a lot of trouble ever since I have been here.I use the biggest condoms I have been able to find [56 durex] and was with the help of my girlfriend, and I still find it very uncomfortable to put them on and they easily slide off and leave them inside her. This is to say the least a bit embarrassing!!! The measurement is the circumference of the penis and I do not consider myself to be so well endowed as to boast about it.Any help here? thanks Dougal

You didn't make any mistake.. but, this is strange??? I think it is them who made the mistake on wrong interpretation of widths, lengths or diameter.

with stats like that, do they really have to do anything at all to encourage gays to not play thai roulette?

if it is slipping off then you are using a too large size.

they are all frigging uncomfortable to put on ;-0 but it is worth it once it is on though ;-)

I agree in principal but they are so tight I can only pull them on half way and believe me they are not very secure

I have the same confusion. "Width" surely means diameter as you interpret, too, but that would make Thai men comparable to horses.

Circumference of 56 mm is not realistic either.

Maybe you could use a smaller size then they don't slide off any more. :)

Thailand has nowhere near the amount of choices in condoms as back home (USA). Another example of rather restricted choices here for various consumer products. Much more quality stuff available back home. I don't see what they think they are gaining by limiting choices in this stuff. Many Japanese brands aslo superior, but often to small.

OK I have just done a 'personal survey" with my own measuring stick and find I am way out with my thoughts of those figures being the girth as in measuring a tree.So way out so what do those measurements represent----its not diam, not width and not circumference---I give in!!!!!!

"Safe Sex" with a Condom is just one other "urban myth", cause they can slip off easely anyime and not being felt/detected...

there is only one type of "safe sex" = NONE!

One would presume that the device actually measures the circunference, but translates on the scale to width? Who will compile all the statistics taken? :)

It's made from latex or other extendable materials. Therefore, you don't get the maximum size it could fit with your computation.

The mistake and confusion just might be caused by the source: The Nation is not endowed, if you will, with proper numerical reporting :)

If it slides off then it is too big for you. I use the larger (56) myself and if I for example would ever use a smaller one it is like being strangled and once it is on it is on very snug, i.e. very hard to accidentally rub off...or jank of with force...

arkady they are not meant to be worn on your head. 2Pi R=CIRCUMFERENCE where PI IS 22 over 7 to obtain a measurement for R You would need to cut a cross section I need all ive got it seems arkady may have to step up to the plate.

You can make them as comfortable as you like, but why not making ones that dont break so easily you useless condom making w4nkers.

My reason for being angry is this happened to me yet again last night, for what i believe to be the 5th time ... its never happened to me in England.

The brand last night was Ansell lifestyles fantasy condoms as a recommendation to avoid them, not that the others are any better.
