rabcbroon
I love xmas too. But what about this miserable git: POST BAG Christmas nightmare [*]Published: 25/11/2009 at 12:00 AM [ It's really insane to be confronted all over Bangkok in all the shopping malls with the Christmas Nightmare and Santa Claus Syndrome. Why are we being attacked so early with the same stupid Christmas songs (White Christmas, Jingle Bells, etc) staged by screaming kids and some old guys from another country, when we are still suffering ear damage from last year? Thailand is a nice country with many beautiful trees and other natural products you can display in the shopping malls until Christmas arrives in December. But now we are being attacked with the most funny and ugly Christmas Trees all over Bangkok and really far too early _ the real Christmas feeling in the Western world starts between Dec 1 and 5 and lasts till Dec 26. Then it is over, but in some places may go on till the end of January so we may still need to pull the plugs by ourselves in the shopping malls, to be freed finally of all the Christmas noise. I think Thailand and the Thai people have better and nicer things to show in the malls than this nightmare returning every year. neverdie
^I hope I didnt let you down. But seriously the true meaning behind Christmas has been totally lost in all this retail crap that goes on. I bet if you asked half the children around these days about christmas they would talk about things like toys and mommy getting drunk down at the trailer park & coming home with 3 daddies and so forth. Birdman
Think and check: Who in my environment is really in need. Then organise and manage to get at least a little bit to make him, them or it happier. And all that on Christmas eve. I can assure you that this will be the best Christmas you ever had. Tarqin
Christmas was lost to commercialism in the West decades ago. It never was anything but commercial in Thailand because their Buddhist by God (pun intended). If you fancy a bit of harmless fun offer a bar girl 100 baht if she can tell you what Christmas is supposed to be about. As an interesting aside a friend of mine is a senior executive with Tescos in UK. The next thing they are working on is selling Thanksgiving to the British. To quite him 'once we got them to buy in to Halloween we knew anything was possible'. I will be on Koh Larn with a carefully selected tour guide. Someone who knows all the right places... ThaiSunshine
When I lived in Pattaya years ago I always spent Christmas Eve at the Admirals Pub in Jomtien. Does it still exist?? They used to make Danish Christmas food: Roasted Duck with brown sauce, red gabbage and brown patatoes! LOVE IT Considering very heavily returning this year, just for the sake of the food! If you're Scandinavian or northern european you will love this food! I don't care much about the commercial "Christmas", but I still love the food associated with this time of year
backsoon
HO-HO-HO! Hold your horses, guys. I am not anti-X-Mas. I put a x-mas tree up in my lounge, decorate it with lights etc. HOWEVER !... I join the people comlaining about the way it is commercialised, planned and campaigned. Too many days before X-Mas I start choking on Jingle Bells, Holy Night and feel like strangling the innocent Red Nose raindeer. There is no escaping it even here in a Buddhist country. THIS COMMERCIALISM is really disgusting. And TV? All the sloppy, snorty movies showing for weeks before. Such agressive everpresent advertising is opressive and counterproductive. As is overindulgence,- food, drink, sweets, etc. Ideally, X-Mas is supposed to be a spiritual experience. It has lost this meaning, drowned in commerse. Oh, one more thing. Do not forget, Christ was a Jew. He preached to his fellow Jews. But since the time immemorial, Christianity was by the very people He hated and who hated Jews. Sort of funny and ironic... Have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Love and Peace! Why do you think it never happens?
gmac
One of the great incidental benefits of moving to Thailand was the escape from the commercialism of Christmas. Now, unfortunately, it has caught up with us over here. I shall be eating my Christmas dinner with the "Bah Humbugs" in the food court, or MacDonalds or wherever I don't have to pay an overinflated price for a poorly cooked, bulk produced meal! Commercializing XMas? And what about Easter, Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving and of course Valentine Day. 90% of the people are celebrating in one way or the other and they don't know what they're celebrating. But ok, regarding XMas: This period starts with the Advent, some weeks before the actual XMas days. Usually the XMas decorations will be set up on the 24th of December (a family-gathering) and will last until the 6th of January (3 Kings.....something). I'm just anxiously waiting for a commericialized version of the Islam sugarfest! Last year a friend from Europe came to celebrate New Year. Unfortunately, things went wrong and she came a few weeks later. A bit disappointed about the fact that we missed the New Year's festivities, we found an alternative: The Independance of Samoa Islands followed by a holy-day from Nepal. Lots of days to choose from. In fact, in the 3 weeks that my friend was here, we did have 15 days to celebrate some kind of event.

Ah the famous McDonald's "Turkey and Sprout Burger". Yes, but it'll only cost 150 Baht rather than 1000 Baht+, won't include a glass or two of cheap plonk they can't sell any other time of year, it'll be hot when it turns up and I'll be in and out in 10 minutes, and all without a party hat!! It may taste like sh!t but at least it'll be cheap sh!t!!
