Fire Three Injured in Pattaya Fire – Welding Work Suspected as Cause

The blaze, which broke out at approximately 04:05 on 24 June, engulfed a two-storey commercial property selling fresh vegetables, meats, frozen foods, groceries and beverages. Witnesses say the fire spread rapidly through the building, forcing occupants to flee. Emergency services from Nong Prue Municipality’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Unit, along with rescue teams from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation and officers from Nong Prue Police Station, rushed to the scene following reports of people trapped inside. One male resident, who had been on the ground floor, became trapped and was unable to exit as the fire raged. Local residents bravely forced open the rear door and managed to pull him to safety. He sustained minor injuries. CCTV of the victims jumping to escape. Two female residents upstairs, the homeowner and her daughter, were forced to jump from a second-floor window to escape the smoke and flames. Both suffered burns to their legs and feet and showed signs of smoke inhalation. They were later transported to hospital for treatment. Concerns mounted as the blaze threatened to spread to a nearby stockpile of fireworks, but fire crews managed to bring the situation under control before further damage occurred. According to neighbours, a welder had recently been working on the property, raising suspicions that the fire may have been sparked by welding activities. Preliminary investigations indicate this as a likely cause. The contractor reportedly fled the scene and is now being sought by police for questioning. Only 16.04 million foreign tourists visited in this period, sparking concern among industry experts. Malaysia leads as the top source of visitors with 2.19 million arrivals, followed closely by China at 2.17 million. Despite these figures, the aftershocks of the pandemic are evident. The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has revised its forecast, now predicting 37 million foreign tourists this year, falling short of the nearly 40 million record set in 2019. The political climate adds another layer of complexity. Concerns over potential instability surged following a leaked conversation between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodia’s former prime minister, Hun Sen, concerning border tensions. The fear of a coup has worried the tourism industry, which is seeking assurance against political turmoil. The prospect of a coup is alarming for operators, as it would deepen the uncertainty overshadowing a fragile recovery. “A coup would be disastrous for our sector,” one local operator warned, emphasising the need for a stable democratic system. As Thailand attempts to revitalise its tourism industry post-pandemic, it faces the dual challenge of overcoming both economic hurdles and political uncertainties.
