junkofdavid2
The government is apparently planning to allow tax deduction for book purchases up to 10,000 baht a year. If you have work permit and are earning the minimum 35,000/month, you are probably on the 10% tax bracket (taxed on the excess income over and above your original 240,000/year tax-free income). Mathematically, this means that if you purchase up to 10,000 baht worth of books per year (the max limit of the tax reduction), you can have up to 10% of that, or 1,000 baht, reduced from your tax payable. If you purchase 1,000 baht worth of books, your tax will be reduced by 100 baht; and so on. So in a way, this works like an "end of year rebate" with any book store. If you're "richer" with a big salary and on the maximum 37% income tax bracket, buying 10,000 baht worth of books reduces your tax by a pretty good 3,700 baht! So it's like a built-in 37% discount on any book in Thailand you buy!! Unless of course, they somehow find a way to dis-include farangs, but I think that would be too complicated for them to do.
