Hotels In Chiang Mai

Can any of you guys recommend a good hotel in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Not looking for “The Ritz”, something around 2000 Baht/night would be fine. What is the situation up there at this time of year (Song Khran over), we will be driving and do not want to be placed into a situation where we have to keep a timetable because of forward bookings? :o

Should not be a problem finding a room at the Inn this time of the year. For that money you can have your choice of most hotels below 4-5 stars. But booking at a tour office when you get to town might be cheaper than direct.

You can also make same day bookings by phone through hotelthailand.com (02) 643-1191.

I've used them a few times on extended road trips and they've always provided great service, even getting heavily discounted bookings for hotels not on their list.

Seconded. Agency room rates will almost always be cheaper than those given to walk-ins, even if the travel agency is right around the corner from the hotel in question.

Why not try the new Raming Lodge, and until Oct 30, 2005, std rms are 900 vs 1200B, superior rms are 1100 vs 1400B, and a suite 2000 vs 3000B-all include 2xABF. The above are net inclusive of 10% svc and 7% govt tax...so says the brochure and rate handout I am quoting from now. It's at 17-19 Loi Kroh Rd, only 200-300 meters from Thapae Gate. The rooms are truly pleasant. Try an agent to compare prices, but the above prices are walk-in to establish a client base. Try 053-271777, 270042 or mobile K Chote at 01-6722219.

I found it while checking out their Lanna brick exterior as a possible exterior for a house I am planning.

Their standard room is well above any standard I have seen anywhere.

If you like it, let me know. Good Luck.

A note of thanks to “tango” and a small report of our findings.

We drove into Chiang Mai and found ourselves hopelessly lost as soon as we crossed the river on Tha Phae Rd. Thai navigator had the map upside down trying to read something of interest on a Wat she saw (they never change :D ). Found a parking spot in a small shopping center and at 16:00 that was no mean feat. As we were driving around we spotted the Duangtawan Hotel and other larger establishments, her immediate reaction was negative.

We decided to abandon the car and get a tuk tuk to take us on a quick tour of the hotels. First port of call was to be the Raming Lodge. The tuk tuk driver laughed and pointed to a building 20 meters away (a small tip for his honesty). Thai wife in raptures, new shiny and only 6 floors tall. Got her to phone and talk turkey about rates etc. 1400 Baht for a “Superior” room on the 5th floor, OK we book for one night and play it from there. Still here after the 3rd night and staying on. :o

Rooms and fittings – great, the floors are ceramic but that fits with the architecture of the building.

Breakfast - Average

Service – excellent on all fronts.

Laundry – 300 Baht for a large bag full, washed and pressed - can get wash only locally for 30/kg – UP2U.

Parking – Rustic, out the back on a vacant lot with shade cloth cover, full time security guard.

Location – Very easy to most local attractions. Walking or by tuk tuk always parked out the front, got to know the drivers which is an advantage.

Highly Recommended. You will definitely get cheaper rates for forward bookings.

Thanks to all for your input.

:D

Found Duangtawan to be a rambling place and wasn't impressed with the rooms, although the location is excellent. The Imp Mae Ping behind it is a bit better, however the rooms are smaller. The top of the tree for the money is the Chiang Mai Plaza, just south of the Night Bazaar. Stay in the Executive Tower (newer wing) that overlooks the pool. Rooms really good and the whole place is a definite notch up from the rest in that price range, gorgeous foyer, although the facade is a bit bland....
