When i was running the Burmese ISP network, we had terrible problems with botnets and DDoS attacks - not small by any means, I'm talking 450mbits completely choked. Although the symptoms are not exactly similar, an attack on the mict server that brought it to it's knees would bring a clientside disruption.

Basically a transaction is done over IRC, control of zombie machines is purchased for a period of time. I think $500 for 12 hours was the going rate. The controller then issued commands to flood the target with icmp packets and off the zombies go.

A complete pain in the bum. You can't really stop it, just block a request the upstream to do the same, in turn they would repeat the process.

for linux users you would have had a giggle yesterday if you were looking for any of the 'tux' tools, as it seems it was a banned word and brought up the same screens. I wounder if they put tux* in their ban list

This could have all been from a Cyber Attack (North Korean response to weapons seizure for example).

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. This is just another fuc_k up.
