Install Esri V 10 Into New Garmin 1490 -- Advice Pls.

Featured Replies

I have a new Garmin 1490t With UK maps installed. I have the new ESRI V10 on my computer HD. Any advice/suggestions re installing the new map would be appreciated.

Assuming that the ESRI V10 came on a CD with the name gmapsupp.img you can either copy this file to the Garmin folder on the SD Card in the Nuvi or copy the map to the internal memory of the Nuvi. Make sure that you either move or rename the UK map (probably also called gmapsupp.img) as the Thai map will overwrite maps with the same name.

In case you bought the Nuvi in the UK and came with the UK map pre-installed than the UK map probably will be called gampprom.img and you can then just copy the ESRI map as gmapsupp.img to the internal memory of the Nuvi (in the Garmin folder).

Actually, for as far as I know you can have 5 maps in the internal memory of the Nuvi:

1. gmapbmap.img - basemap

2. gmapprom.img - pre-installed map (if any) or additional map if you replace this map

3. gmapsupp.img - additional map

4. gmapprom1.img - additional map

5. gmapoem.img - additional map but this map cannot be deselected

Actually my ESRI CD (TSM v.10) came with the map file named gmapprom.img.

Thanks guys. The Nuvi was purchased in the UK. I have no CD -- simply a file on my computer HD named :gmapsupp.img.

I live in the Si Saket Provence and am interested in comments re this ESRI map v. competitors.

Any suggestions appreciated as this is new to me.

The ESRI (TSM v10) map is the best overall map in use. The Garmin/TeleAtlas (City Navigator SEA NT v4.5) map has better road detail in some rural areas. Rotweiler (All Thailand v5.47) map is somewhere in-between. No map is 100% perfect, I have all three maps loaded on my Nuvi 205.

hi tig28 , Is the ESRI TSM V.10 map work properly with your GARMIN 1490T ?

I made a call to ESRI this morning . The guy told me that TSM V.10 cannot work on any Garmin series bought from outside Thailand . Because the firmware didn't support .

I told him that I got one Garmin 1470T from Taiwan .

So is that ture ? should I believe him ?

The Garmin junction view and highway modes are firmware and map specific. So the firmware has to be matched to ESRI TSM v.10 for the GPS to function properly.

So what's all 4 models you have ?

And does the junction view and highway modes work well too ?

I agree about the ESRI v10 being the best map for Thailand, although the SEAsia v4.5 has better detail in some of the up-country areas.

As far as using junction view etc, it is possible to flash the firmware of a UK model to the Asian firmware, so that it will support the extra features.

If you are comfortable and confident about proceeding, I suggest you google something like "garmin flashing firmware junction view" (no inverted commas). You will find plenty of information on how to do it.

I have a nuvi 1340T which I bought in the U.K. it came with a pre installed European Map (CN Europe NT 2010.10) I have been trying to install TSM v10 but without success.

The Garmin folder of the internal memory had just one file installed (GarminDevice.xml) there were no .img files installed anywhere. I have a downloaded unlocked copy of TSM v10 which I unzipped and renamed gmapsupp.img, I then copied this to the Garmin folder in the internal memory, but the file is not recognized. What am I doing wrong?

Go into the GPS file Garmin and change the map name from gmapsupp.img to gmapsupp. Just drop the .img. That worked on my Nuvi 750.

How do you know the file is not recognized. Does Thailand Street Map v10 NT [English] show on the 'map info' screen? Tools/Settings/ Map/Map Info or something similar. The new map has to be loaded in the Garmin folder along with, or in place of, the existing map file. Look for the existing map .img file(s), they are there somewhere. Are you certain TSM v10 is unlocked?

As an alternative, get a microSD/SD card for your nuvi 1340T and create a Garmin folder thereupon. Copy & paste the TSM v10 gmapsupp.img map file to the microSD card Garmin folder and you should be all set to go, provided you are properly unlocked.

It would be courteous for people asking questions to let us know how it worked out.

Sorry for not replying earlier.

It turns out that on some newer nuvi models the map files are in a hidden folder Garmin\System. To view the folder with windows go to Tools/Folder options/View then tick "view hidden files and folders" and untick "Hide protected operating system files".

There were 3 .img files in the folder gmapbmap.img (Base Map) gmaptz.img (Time Zone) and gmapprom (Installed Map).

First I tried copying the TSM v10 map into the folder and renaming it gmapsupp.img but it was still not recognised, but then I tried renaming it gmapprom1.img and everything is working fine.

I now have both the European map and the Thailand map installed in the internal memory, I'm not sure but maybe the file name gmapsupp.img is only recognised if it is installed on a SD card.

Here is a screen shot of my 750 Nuvi internal memory.

Gmapprom is the US map and gmapsupp is Thailand

I also have another Thai map on my memory card. It is in a folder called garmin and it is also a gmapsupp. No .img on the end.

That would be right, NUVI 14XX series have new map recognition conventions. You can now create a subdir in your SDMicro card called /map and place all your maps into the subdir in the SDMicro, no more need to have gmapsupp.img etc although they still will be used. Also in your internal memory create a Subdir /map same thing but will take up space.

You can now load all your maps into the SDmicro /map in your own name e.g. EsriThai.img, Malsyai.img etc etc and they will be recognized. The number of maps you can put in is only limited by the size of your SDmicro card.

You then select the map you need in the map info menu.....

Apologies for the long absence -- sudden emergency return to Australia.

IO ... when I attempted the above with an unlocked V10.1 into the SD card of my Garmin 1490T there was no combination of file names within a Garmin folder that the 1490 would recognize.

With a friend helping (also with a 1490) I'm sure we tried every thing mentioned is these threads. However we set up the SD card ----- it was totally ignored .

Frustrated ... I resorted to installing the map to the units internal memory (gmapsupp --- Without the .img) --- this is working fine.

This is not my ideal solution (for the long term) but at least I now have a working GPS. I can offer no useful comments on the ESRI V10.1 map as my experience is very limited.

Odd for Garmin to be making the piracy so much easier.

But it also makes it for legal buyer easier.

Say I am European, who likes to travel in Thailand, but often goes to China and USA for business, than you are also in troubles.

There is still the Map limit (for my oregon 200, it is 4000) so it is still impossible to upload the complete world, no matter how big the microsd is.

I have another Thailand map on my Nuvi 750 memory card. It is in a folder called Garmin and it too will not work using the .img behind the gmapsupp. If I check that map name in "map information" in the GPS, it will default to that memory card map when I start the GPS. When I remove the check mark, it will open the map in the internal memory and ignore the memory card map. The ESRI V10.1 works the same way as the V10.

I also have a Nuvi 855 and it too will not work using the .img behind the gmapsupp.
