Moved into a great place but am having a bit of an issue..

Theres lots of loose dogs in the area, disturbingly these are not all loose soi dogs but farang owned pets with collars etc allowed to roam free.. Personally I love dogs and pets but am not happy about thier current habits..

The villa I have moved into has multiple ways of entrace for dogs, theres no practical way I can 'fence them out'.. Theres loads of freshly appearing dog shit over the graden levels and I keep finding a reappearing one in precisely the same place in the center of the pool level.. Obviously a bit of a territorial thing..

Also lost a trainer, Oakley sandal, chewed up stuff etc..

I can see no way that a 'quiet word' with the owners is going to help as I have already witnessed a very heated argument between 2 farangs over dogs not kept restricted / chained and the fact that theres lots in this area means they can always claim it wasnt lovely fido..

So short of getting an air gun and sitting there like Elmer Fudd of a night time is there anything I can do ?? I have heard that Lions / Tigers piss makes dogs run a mile but unfortunately I am a little low on big cat urine at the moment ???

Any suggestions ?? Anything that makes a territorial area unpleasant (smells) ?? I am not keen on inflicting excessive pain or injury though mild detterants I will listen too..

Firecrackers and a garden hose worked for me when we moved in.

Two soi dogs have decided to move in with us, they're ok, we have 3 now and a litter of 7 :D .

The most annoying thing here is that most neighbours seem to have rodent-like dogs that bark all day at anything that moves. Of course, the owners are at work all day and it sure doesn't bother them. :o I counted one of them barking 83 times in one minute, how may is that in a day?

A few have disappeared lately :D , I didn't do it.

I suffer from dog polution too, both the not to be stepped in kind, plus the noise variety. I dont know about town dogs, but country dogs know exactly what a catapult is, and they tend to run as soon as they see one in your hands! Normaly a catapult will cost you about 10 Baht, they are great fun and you can recapture your child hood at same time as scaring the dogs off. If that doesnt work kill the owner. :o

Theres lots of loose dogs in the area, ...

Sorry to hear about your problem. But, as a word of warning to other relocators, you really must check out the noise, dog and traffic - and neighbour - situation before you move in. I tend to park (in my pick-up) near my prospective new house and just sit there - or lie there - for an hour or so. Also go there very early in the morning and see if there's a lot of noise from dogs / insects / lorries etc.

I actually paid for a fence to be put around 3 sides of my current rented house - there's a big wall at the back. Just metal poles in concrete with a 1" square galvanised wire fence. It keeps the dogs out - they're too lazy to jump it - and they go piss on the neighbours plants and pick-up's wheels. I also got a rolling gate put in at the end of the drive. I recently noticed that another house a few houses away has also put the same sort of fence around it.

Have a look at your local Tesco's - they probably have a "pest control" section.

check out the thai ridgeback thread, purchase one, and use it... fight fire with fire

liked the valium idea actually, never thought about that?!... provided the owners care one way or an other, cant remember though if valium really works on dogs or have to use something else like antihistamine.... will check vet pharmacy book

Easy up here in the rice paddies :o

Although Khun Thaksin tried to stop the practice some months ago on cruelty grounds our "Dog Catchers" are back in business again. They actually pay for dogs with plastic buckets and the like, average mutt will get you 2 of em. A great community service.

For the most part the dogs finish up over the border in Laos to grace the dining mats then tastes of the most discerning pallets. :D
