my wife's visa is dated july 8th, but she entered the uk on august 23rd; when does the 6 months start.

At a guess the 23rd of August.

When she arrived in UK they must have stamped her passport as evidence of entry

I think that the 8th of July is the date when the visa was granted (there should be also a date precising when the visa becomes void)

So 23rd of August should be it but why don't you contact the Embassy?

UK visas begin from the date they are issued, unless a request for it to be post dated is made when the application is submitted.

So, if the visa is dated 8th July, then that is when it starts and it will expire 6 months from that date, i.e. 7th January.
