I want another one of these for the house in Thailand http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-VOIP321-Co...e/dp/B000GRUNEU

It is a Skype compatible DECT cordless handset with docking station and base unit. Essentially it allows you to access Skype from the cordless phone without having to sit in front of your computer.

I cannot get Amazon to post it direct so I'm going to have to send it out airmail. Now the postage is going to cost about the same as the item and I really don't want the Thai customs getting any daft ideas and trying to charge the earth for this. In fact, I'd rather it was not touched by customs and just passed through.

It will be going from the UK to Buriram, to a Thai female name.

Any ideas on the best way to get it to Thailand with minimal interference and cost ?

It can be opened and "used" if that helps as I can pack the one I already have back in its box and send that.

Failing that ^^^, get it sent 'International Signed For', it's pot luck whether it gets stopped by customs but over the years we've only had one parcel on which we had to pay (nominal) tax / duty and we've never had a signed-for package go adrift. We actually had a similar unit sent last year (the Linksys version) with no issues, makes Skype wife-proof :)

Do NOT use a courier service (UPS, DHL etc) you WILL get stung for all sorts of extra charges.

remove package and send as normal parcel/gift or low value and you have a very good chance to don't pay anything.

PM me with weight, size and where it is in UK.

I may be able to bring it out in January.

Thanks for your kind offer. I don't have the item yet so I'm not sure. I'll keep your offer in mind. Many thanks.

Yes, she's used one already and though it needs a driver to be installed from the website (Vista upgrade) she could manage it very well. It is not just for international calls, I bought a Skype Out subscription and as it is a cordles DECT phone and the quality is great, she can use it to phone Thai mobiles at her heart's content. Even at Bt1 or Bt2 a minute, she can run through more than the cost of this in a month ! and I think she (read I'd) be ahead within a couple of months.

I've sent documents via Fed Ex but I have heard about them paying more attention to couriered stuff. Used Royal Mail small packet to sent a child's toy and that was fine. I might risk that this time for convenience.

Will need the packaging to protect it but I can open it and perhaps reduce some of the weight, though the box will have to go. I could fashion a box out of other cardboard though to make it look "old and manky" !

Get it sent registered for a start, then take out a customs declaration, and even to the point of sticking a little note to accompany the package, with some bullshit like..."here is the sample that we would like you to evaluate for manufacture....blah blah blah.."

customs declaration, "no commercial value, sample only"...you should be sweet!

Yeah ! It is a Philips phone and I'm asking some Thai woman in a semi rural village for a quote to manufacture ?

If I can keep it at 2kg, Royal Mail small packets will sent it for £23.26 (max 2kg, less per 100g sliding scale under 2kg. 1.5kg is £17.76 for instance). No signatures but insured for up to £39. Adding on a signature costs £3.70 and if you want tracking, double or triple the total postage costs. Not practical and attention grabbing.

I see where you are coming from but a simple x-ray would identify it as a phone and charger with something else but I do wonder about the likelihood of someone taking a fancy to it if they do x-ray and how that chance increases the more the package stands out.

From the linked website: "Boxed-product Weight: 1.4 Kg"

In my experience, the least risk of having the item examined by Thai customs and import duty charged is to send it via Royal Mail registered letter. Not parcel post, but letter post. Letters are accepted up to 2 kg. There are some limitations on measurements but a parcel like that will be well within the limits.

My parents often send me things of a similar size with simple Royal Mail registered post. They even wrote the contents on the outside in case customs thought it was a lump of C4 or the like. Always arrived as straight regular mail. Never lost. Never queried.
