Gps On A Mobile Phone

Featured Replies

(To the Mod's: if this is the wrong topic, please move it.)

I have been looking for a new mobile phone and as a minimum requirement, the new moblile phone should have at least a GPS system buit in.

Lot's of mobile phones in the 10,000 Baht range offer a A-GPS with maps.

Nokia, LG 505, Windows based phones, PDA's, etc...

But it is not clear to my if the GPS system is free with the Mobile phone or has to be purchased (eventualy after a trying period) and is prone to a mothly or yearly subscription.

Can anybody shed a light on this?

TIA

You can do what you want. You can have GPS phone that has a poor GPS signal without the A-GPS. You will pay for the phone GPS using the A-GPS and still have a very small screen or you can have a dedicated GPS unit that has a readable screen with better maps that you buy one time. Besides paying for the A-GPS you have to pay Nokia for the maps. For me it is a no brainer. I have a Garmin GPS that costs me nothing after the purchase and a great phone that has wifi and has great audio for phone calls.

Nokia Maps are free. Easy to download from the Nokia(OVI)website. You do however have to pay for voice navigation for Nokia, but I don't use that.

I find it best to use google maps on my mobile phone, very detailed maps. I have an unlimited data plan so it doesn't cost me extra.

I have a couple of Garmin units for my cars (China and Thailand) and a handheld Garmin 60csx and they come in handy for driving and when I ride my mountain bike.

I couldn't disagree more. There is no reason a Garmin GPS without a phone couldn't have a phone built in these days.

Look at the plethora of products on the market now that have GPS, A-GPS, Big Screens, Configurable maps some free (some even made by Garmin!), wi-fi, gsm 3g, the whole works in ONE piece of hardware. That was the no brainer for me:-)

I love the OVI maps on my Nokia which are free, but you pay for the voice navigation (well worth the price). However, I'm actually looking at a separate dedicated device now because its a real pain to take calls and use the navigation and maps at the same time.

This will also give me more freedom to choose exactly the right phone for my needs.

Also, check out Google Maps as a nice replacement for Nokia Maps.

I have bought a LG GT505 and it's great. With GPS and WiFi, you can find your ways easily with google maps

I have the Garmin maps software on my phone - a Nokia N97. The built in GPS in the phone sucks, typically it has a accuracy of 50 - 100 m. Instead I use an external bluetooth gps. Originally I used the GARMIN 10x which cost me 9000 B in Thailand but would only set you back about 4,000 in the US or UK. Now I use the QSTARZ 1000x a really excellent little gps unit with wonderful sensitivity available in the UK for 3000 B. It is possible to unlock the GARMIN software so that it can be used with gps units other than GARMIN ones. I use the SMARTCOM GPS software on my phone to plot my course when hiking.

I thaught that the GPS software in the LG GT505 was only a DEMO of WISEPILOT software and works only 30 days.

After 30 days, if you decide to continue to use it, you must buy an offcial release of Wisepilot which is a little expensive.

"The LG GT500/GT505 has A-GPS and an exclusive navigation application available for download. Featuring voice routing capabilities and highly advanced touch map technology, you can effortlessly find your way around. Visit www.lg.wisepilot.com to download your free 30 day navigation trial."

BlackJack, the 5800 (Music Express) is a nice phone and not that expensive.

Surely one of my choices together with E95.

One question tough, the Garmin maps that you download, are they a egistered version or a cracked version?

Do you have the address of the download?

Can somebody explain to me what the difference is between GPS and A-GPS (Assisted GPS).

Nearly all the Nokia phones (> 10,000 Baht) are equipped with A-GPS.

The HTC Android (< 10,000 Baht) is equipped with GPS.

A-GPS uses the cell phone towers to help find a satellite signal. The GPS antenna in a cell phone is weak and finding the satellites can be a problem without using A-GPS.

When you are using A-GPS, you are connected to the Internet and unless you have an unlimited phone account, it can get quite expensive. Depending where you are at, there may not be enough cell phones towers to triangulate from thus A-GPS can't help even though it is still connected to the Internet.

Nokia announced that all their smartphones will get lifetime voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation through Ovi Maps for free. All you need is download the free new 3.3 version of Ovi Maps and you are good to go.

Nokia (Ovi) map of Thailand, where is the Kanchanaphisek Bridge and southern outer ring road?

I have downloaded Google Maps, and the Google Maps seems to be more detailled as the Nokia Maps.

One question tough, how can I see the coordinates of a point?

Yesterday, I was in front of a building from which I wanted to get the coordinates, but I could not find how to display or save them.

Im running Garmin maps on my Nokia N97, works well and free to !!!! .....best to google on how to set it up as i have no idea (mate sorted me when he last visited).

From what I understand Voice guided navigation for Nokia Phones is now free for the life of the phone.

Guys.. Using OviMaps and a GPS Phone.. (Nokia C5).. I DO NOT NEED a data plan (GPRS) right?

The in-built OviMap on the phone can work right out of the box with GPS (without Edge or GPRS)?

Google Maps requires data plan.. and that's why I ask the question. And, it will save some cost without the data plan.

Please advise.

Also, let me know your experience of using Ovi Maps for Bangkok... Any good..?

A proper GPS device does not need an internet connection to help locate satellite signals, hence no data plan required.

OVI is usable in Bangkok but I prefer Garmin Mobile XT with TSM V10 or V10.1

As far as I know, Garmin Mobile XT and Garmin Maps are currently only available for devices running Symbian, Windows Mobile and Palm OSs. There is a special version for Blackberry though.
