Gps On A Mobile Phone

Featured Replies

I have a hacked Samsung Omnia i8910 and I use both Google and Ovi maps in Bangkok. I prefer the Ovi maps though as it gives me the voice directions.

Ovi seems to work faster than the Google Maps but thats just my experience. The voice guidance is really cool!

You can do what you want. You can have GPS phone that has a poor GPS signal without the A-GPS. You will pay for the phone GPS using the A-GPS and still have a very small screen or you can have a dedicated GPS unit that has a readable screen with better maps that you buy one time. Besides paying for the A-GPS you have to pay Nokia for the maps. For me it is a no brainer. I have a Garmin GPS that costs me nothing after the purchase and a great phone that has wifi and has great audio for phone calls.

Nokia Maps are free. Easy to download from the Nokia(OVI)website. You do however have to pay for voice navigation for Nokia, but I don't use that.

I find it best to use google maps on my mobile phone, very detailed maps. I have an unlimited data plan so it doesn't cost me extra.

I have a couple of Garmin units for my cars (China and Thailand) and a handheld Garmin 60csx and they come in handy for driving and when I ride my mountain bike.

Guys.. Using OviMaps and a GPS Phone.. (Nokia C5).. I DO NOT NEED a data plan (GPRS) right?

The in-built OviMap on the phone can work right out of the box with GPS (without Edge or GPRS)?

Google Maps requires data plan.. and that's why I ask the question. And, it will save some cost without the data plan.

Please advise.

Also, let me know your experience of using Ovi Maps for Bangkok... Any good..?

I use Ovi maps in bangkok and am happy with it. I recently went to america and visited my grandkids and just had to download maps of my kids areas to the phone to get navigation.

For those of you that dont know. Ovimaps has had free voice navigation for about 8 months, Nokia no longer charges for it.

As far as the A-GPS goes, yes that's a bit annoying. I turned off my GPRS to stop the damned data charges. it works fine without data link. The data link is NOT required for A-GPS phones. it just speeds up the GPS lock.

I recently bought a very cheap Nokia 5230 at less than 6000 baht, which now comes with free navigation and in-car accessories.

Out of the box it connects to local maps in163 countries. Nokia have bought a mapping company to offer this feature and compete with Samsung and others such as Apple. Many current 2010 models have this free feature.

If I touch the Maps logo and then My Position. The screen then shows a street map of my location in Chonburi. You can zoom in and out. It is usable.

If you then want to Navigate to somewhere with voice instructions you touch Menu and either Walk or Drive. At this point you are connected to GPS system. My own data plan is AIS One To Call which costs peanuts....100 baht for 20 hours per month. Unless you need GPS for very long periods cost is not a significant factor.

After telling it where you want to go its gives voice instructions and a moving/dynamica map. It has a lot of features and links built in eg Favourites,Events,TripAdvisor, HungryGoWhere etc etc. Its very comprehensive.

Now to the meat.

Recently went through Bangkok up to the North of Isaan in a car equipped with a Garmin device.

We ran them side by side.

The Nokia gave better more detailed voice instructions. eg approaching a turn it warned you before you got there. The Garmin gave much less warning.

The Nokia Ovi maps are free. They seemed adequate in fact nearly identical to the Garmins but we were in a car and could not test its understanding of the No Motorbikes on Toll Roads capability. Friends with Garmins have been led to Toll Booths near Bangkok where they have to turn back and self navigate.

Conclusion. The Nokia is very cheap and is very clever phone but the screen is smaller than GPS machines. But a single Garmin map update costs nearly as much as this phone with its free lifetime maps which are updated automatically at source not on your phone. Its very flexible and fits in a shirt pocket. The battery life when walking is likely to be short. In a car its not an issue as you plug in the lighter socket.` It is astonishingly well specified and clever phone compared to Top of The Range models of even two years ago.Touch Screen, Internet access, Google Maps. Google Search, Emails, Music, Radio,Camera,Video and sound recording and very easy to use and intuitive software.

Within its limitations the Nokia seems like an amazing bargain to me.

As usual You do get what you pay for and You pay your money and you take your choice. Up To You.

For me it is a no brainer. I have a Garmin GPS that costs me nothing after the purchase and a great phone that has wifi and has great audio for phone calls.

I couldn't disagree more. There is no reason a Garmin GPS without a phone couldn't have a phone built in these days.

Look at the plethora of products on the market now that have GPS, A-GPS, Big Screens, Configurable maps some free (some even made by Garmin!), wi-fi, gsm 3g, the whole works in ONE piece of hardware. That was the no brainer for me:-)

I have a HTC phone (android), all I want is GPS-software (thailand, Laos).Since my phone has A-GPS it should be possible to put s/w inside, BUT what I'd like to know is which one is best, userfriendly.

Anybody out there who can help me?????
