Police to crackdown on violent students

Published on January 14, 2010

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt General Santhan Chayanont yesterday vowed to take tough action against brawling students.

"We will charge them with engaging in illegal and criminal activities that cause disturbance in the country," he said.

Students from different vocational schools have been engaging in bloody feuds for decades, often shooting dead pupils from rival schools. Such incidents frequently take place in Bangkok's Pathumwan district, where the Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan Ok's Uthenthawai Campus and the Pathumwan Institute of Technology are located.

"The problem has been dragging on for too long now and we need to start seriously cracking down on it," Santhan said.

Deputy Metropolitan Police Commissioner MajGeneral Sumeth Ruangsawas said police would step up security in the Pathumwan area on February 1, when the Uthenthawai campus will be celebrating its Founding Day.

If these schools were any good at instruction in "technology" these brawlers would have come up with inventive methods of maiming and crippling each other.

Perhaps the police should simply furnish them with brooms and garbage bags and tell them to do something useful and clean the sidewalks and streets.

Alternatively, give them better armaments and a vacant rice paddy so they can wipe each other out completely

From Wikipedia's entry for Khon Kaen University.

"It is a well-known tradition that in the past at Khon Kaen University, students from the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Agriculture engaged in annual inter-faculty brawl at the University's sports fields. Locations differed each year, but bloodshed was certain. Students, largely male, from each faculty brought to the battleground their most effective weapons found in their respective toolsheds."

Bystander knifed, 17 arrested in new student rioting flareup

A 40-strong student brawl outside MBK Shopping Mall on Wednesday night led to the arrest of 17 Patumwan Institute of Technology students, and police requests for arrest warrants against five students who allegedly stabbed a cell phone technician at the scene.

Deputy city police chief Pol Maj General Sumet Reungsawat said a security guard alerted police that 40 students were fighting on the Skytrain elevated walkway outside MBK's Tokyu Mall.

Police arrested 17 students and found the technician - later identified as Aksorn Thepachai- with multiple stab wounds. They retrieved a knife, and will interview the victim's girlfriend, to learn if his injuries related to the brawl, he said.

I am not a big sport's fan, but wouldn't this stuff be played out better on a sport's field? I suppose that would just inflame the tension.

Too bad they can't compete in some academic or technological matters.

perhaps Oxford and Cambridge should give up on the old-fashioned rowing and do a yearly Battle Royale...

Gangs at Technical schools are well known in most countries,

here the policing of them has been sub-standard, and now it's out of their control.

A little undercover work sounds like it's called for.

I hope your not suggesting that the police go to school. Or maybe they should just join the gangs--oh, wait they are already a member of one, I think.

Uhh, can you give me some examples, preferably from the developed world. Not places like Russia, ok. I must live in in a bubble because I can't recall such incidents in countries like Denmark, Australia, Canada, USA or Germany. I'm sorry but if a school was serious about stopping such stupidity it would expel and ban the students. I suspect that many of these "fighters" are not even students and are just the typical under/unemployed adolescents to be found throughout the LOS.

I think most institutes of higher education give their students enough work to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Most students are busy enough looking to the future and planning a life to be involved in this stuff.

I have never heard of it in other countries either.

Sorry you must have lived in posh neighborhoods, most technical schools in USA are for those that don't

'fit the university mold' or have the cash or are disruptive types and are told jail, army or technical school.

And often the students fall into 'supportive groupings', vs other groups. ie gangs in many cases.

Not all schools of course. I did a course specific technical school for one thing I needed to know for work.

But I have encountered a number of these places and they could be much rougher than community colleges

and the like.

Saw the same in France too. Les Banlieus au tour de Paris are some pretty rough bourgs mate.

Don't know about in your hi so bubble though, since your mileage always varies...

Posh and technical schools don't usually go together. I've not only lived near them, I've taught at them. The problems I recall were keggers, some drug use, occasional fights, souped up cars and fast driving.

In most countries you don't have technical schools in close proximity to one another. They are geographically spread out.

They are, by and large, testosterone driven places, with all the accompanying and associated problems.

Does it happen, I am sure it does. I doubt it is an on-going and endemic problem like it is here.

Both of these schools should be shut down. Permanently

There are gangs in schools in the US, for sure. However, they are a little more cautious about their activities because they know the police will actually do something about public incidents.

Juvenile violence in Japan is even more cowardly- usually a case of 30 or 40 to 1.

Violence within schools takes place here even in 'good schools'; frequently there are shakedown rackets of younger students run by older ones.

And by gangs, it's isnt predominantly the national ones like Bloods and Crips, but more local groupings.

And yes shake downs are not uncommon in inner city technical schools.

It cant be that bad for they re "shooting dead pupils from rival schools". They are already dead? LOL
