Thai mafia

Featured Replies

From what I have heard, it doesn't matter whether you are a Thai or Falang business owner in Thailand, if your business is successful you can expect a visit from the Thai mafia.

Again, from what I have heard, the mafia will use stand-over tactics or offer protection to the business owner in return for regular cash payments.

Over the years there has been many newspaper articles of owners/managers being bashed and/or their premises being trashed.

It can only be assumed that these recriminations were as a result of non co-operation with the mafia.

It seems that these thugs aren't very choosey as to when they carry out these attacks, and there are reports of owners/managers being shot/bashed in full view of customers.

My questions are, if you were a customer under similar circumstances, what action, if any, would you take?

Do you become a hero and intervene or do you turn your back and keep on drinking?

If you decide not to get physically involved, would you be willing to become a police witness and face the accused in court?

If you have first hand knowledge of occurrences involving the mafia, I would love to hear your story

It's not just "the mafia" you have to pay....
As a farang it's hard to swallow, but that's what you must do. When in Thailand do as the thai's do and remain ignorant of the facts.

What do you mean ? the Police, right ?  :o

Unless you are opening a bar or something, the only Mafia is the Police.

You're most at risk (to a street tax) if you're operating a shady business.    If you're selling booze, sex, or drugs, someone will come collect.

My family has been in Thailand since the 30's... and although I can't speak for all of those 70 years of business,... I have yet to see anyone come ask for us to pay any kind of regular month to month type protection money.    However, gratitude type payments (sometimes to the police, more often to low to mid ranking district officials) when we want something done, IS normal.

:o

You can always try the "my generals bigger than your general"

Works well unless they counter with "actually no mine is bigger"
