Expat Jobs Bangkk

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My mate, who is living in Bangkok has asked if I know of any job agencies which recruit westerners.

The only one I know is jobs4farangs.co which he has searched.

Anyone know of any other places he can go?

I live in the UK so it is difficult for me to assist him.

He has knowledge of security and investigations and is a retired police officer from the UK.

He is willing to try different roles, train, take courses etc. as long as there is a goal at the end.

He is married to a Thai and as I mentioned lives in Bangkok.

Any help/suggestions will be great.

I have told him to register here and post also!

Thank you.

I thouight that a reply by some smart alec would come up.

If you have nothing positive to add please do not comment or are you that bored?

He wants additional advice to what he knows which is little, he has not been in Thailand long and needs positive assistance from those who want to give it.

All I am doing is trying to help a friend. A good guy.

Actually, I have probably given about the best advice that this friend of yours can get.

Again, if he expecting others to do it for him, then he is going to struggle. He can either choose to heed that advice or ignore it, it's up to him, but I if you do wish to help your friend then I suggest you pass it on.

I'm suprised at the amount of jobs I am qualified for on that jobs4farangs site. I thought it was supposed to be difficult to get a job in Thailand. Doesn't look like it. Anyone have any experience with agencies like this? Would it be legal (with work permit) work or on the sly? I might apply for a few just to see what happens.

And Eggman, I think Moonrakerman is suggesting that networking skills may be your friends best chance to find employment, and if he has to go all the way back to the UK for help, when he is right there where he wants to work... well, he's not networking very effectively is he?

If your mate is willing to train then tell him to do a TEFL course and go and teach English because that is the only job he will find that is legal over here.

All this talk of jobs is rubbish ....if a thai can do it then an expat isnt legally allowed to. And the experience he has so far doesnt set him apart from many Thai men.

There are a few websites which may offer some opportunities, but these will be few and far between if your mate doesn't have a degree or specialist skill. Try jobsdb.com, Thailand website, and filter your search by 'expat'. Try the US jobsite jobs.com and search for 'Thailand'. Check out the Thai website of monster.com.

I do have a German friend (TPV) who obtained a good job as middle-manager for a security company in Phuket. No degree required.

Actually, with his previous experience in the police force, I suggest he looks to obtain a job in the above type of role, as security operating manager or consultant for a high-end housing/condo project, or for a 4/5 star hotel. To help his cause, he should also learn to speak Thai.

Additionally, (I suggest this because it will also help his cause), he should volunteer to work with the Thai Tourist Police, (TPV). That can also help to give him some useful contacts and on-the-ground experience. In Bangkok there is a volunteer group in Khao San Road and another group at Lumpini, (but for that last one you need to speak reasonable Thai).

This comes as some news to the 50 or so expats on full packages that are employed by my company in Thailand not in the TEFL field. This is along with the thousands of others working for other companies as well.

Just what I was about to say.

I work with about 80 expat engineers and know other companies that employ similar numbers, as well as expats working for local contractors.

All with work permits so all legal.

OK...I also know people who are working with specialist skills but have you not taken into account the only skills that this guy has is a police officer. I dont think that is something that a thai cant do....do you? Then again maybe..........hehe

Police Officers tend to people that perform well under pressure and can react correctly very quickly. They often make good project or diving safety officers. Often project safety personnel double as security as well. He might want to look into taking some courses that might qualify him. Of course, as is stated here many, many times, connections in the industry is more important the qualifications.

I dont have any real specialist skills, infact I dont have real education to speak of (Basic public schooling to Yr10 In Aus)

My only trade qualifications are that of a Baker and Screenprinter, Iam however employed out here on an expat salary in a Prototyping/Fabrication Role for a very large Thai company.

There is hope yet for those with no Diploma's :D:D

The Thai police DO employ foreign specialists for training their people but I think it is more likely to be with a direct contract to the foreign police force than individuals that rock up and say " 'Gis a job"

hahaha....you say you have no skills and then state you have a trade qualification in screen printing. Did you buy the qualification at Koh San Road then?

Come on you guys....do you seriously think that most of these people would be teaching English for a next to nothing pay packet if they could walk into a company and pick up an ex-pat job off the shelf. Of course their are exceptions but you have to be either very lucky or very qualified to land one of them.

I guess that if you have been lucky enough to get a well paid job over here then you tend to live in your own world and not realise what the real Thailand is like.

Hahaha, Baking and Screenprinting have exactly zero cross over skills in regards to my current position of Prototyping/Fabrication Manager.

Well I'm not familiar with either job so I wouldnt know, but the point is you do have a qualification.

When someone in the west does a degree at university, the subject doesnt matter so much, its more the fact that they have proved to the world that they have the aptitude to learn, and therefore they can then apply for many different positions on the strength of that degree.

Are you saying that you got that job by walking in off the street with no experience and they gave it you. Or did you quote your qualifications first. There again maybe it wasnt what you know but who you know of course.

LOL, maybe im not telling the whole story, I can say 100% my WP was given with out proof of any qualifications.

My employment however was initially through the AUS company I worked for, in 2006 the owner set up a JV with a Thai company but in 2008 when the JV dissovled the Thai company kept me on.

Could i have gained similar employment without the Aus/Thai JV, not a chance.

Hey thanks spoonman for coming clean.

As this topic is about an unskilled man with no contacts I still stand by what I originally said earlier...the only thing he can do is do the TEFL course and then go and teach English. Although officially you still need a degree.

But I've enjoyed the debate with you though.

HL :)
