I understand that in Thailand the insurance is for the vehicle not the person.

I am visiting my Thai girlfriend for 3 months in Feb (I have a non res multiple entry visa).

Does that mean I can drive her car without having to have additional insurance.

I think she only has the minimum level. Is it possible for me to have additional insurance to cover damage to vehicle while I am driving and for a bail bond.

Any info would be gratefully recieved.

PS I've never used a forum before so I apologise if I do something wrong

I guess it depends on the insurance policy and the grade of insurance, the compulsory insurance is 1300 Baht for my vehicle, the class 1 insurance is 14,000 Baht. I am allowed one named driver on that policy, alternatively I would have to pay considerably more for any licensed driver to be covered.

There are many brokers nationwide and they will be able to give you a more authoritive answer on vehicle insurance. Although I am in the North of Thailand I use a broker in Pattaya, if you PM me I would be pleased to pass on their details, I have no commercial interest but have been pleased by the level of service and competetive pricing.

The premium for the saloon/4 door pick-up is 646 Baht !

You are quite correct and the insurance is with the vehicle. You did not say how old the vehicle is but may we suggest if your gf only has the CTPL cover you may think about increasing the cover as it is only the very basic 3rd Party cover.

To answer you question re 'short term' cover, the answer is no as all policies are per year. To protect yourself (and your gf) we would suggest the 1st class (comprehensive) cover if the vehicle is not too old.

Please go Here for a quotation from the Thai Visa Brokers

Ok TVI guy, I quoted those figures last night from memory and got them wrong, doh, checked the details today as follows: Class 1 13,069 Baht, Compulsory 967 Baht, about 14,000 total. The vehicle is a 4WD 3 litre Vigo 2 years old.

The figure for a 2 door pick-up is correct at 967 Baht - as we said, for a car & a 4 door pick-up it is 646 Baht

For what its worth I drive on my girlfriends licence using my International Driving permit. I contacter her broker to see if I would be covered. No problem says he. Just to be 100 % sure I went to the insurance companies head office, spoke to a senior member of staff there and was told that it is the car that is insured not the driver and should I have an accident I would be covered by her policy. However, if a car is older than 10 years you can only get third party cover.

OP just sent you a PM, if you look at the top right of your screen and click on messages it should open. I must say that the site sponsors Thai Visa Insurance are well worth getting a quote from also, I have heard good things about their service too.

Cheers
