Moving To Cambodia

Featured Replies

I am sick of TL. I am thinking to go to Cambodia.

Ive been before several times, to Siem Reap, PP and Shianoukville.

PP has a lot of crime and feels a bit desperate. Where is a good place with a friendly expat scene. Siam Reap?? Is there anywhere else cool i have missed??

I need regular internet access since i work online (trading). Can you get GPRS/Edge and what is the coverage? How can i keep connected? Can a foreigner get ADSL?

How much am I looking at for a reasonable (safe) furnished apartment or house

How can i get money from my oversead bank account while in cambodia?

Thanks

Blimey you are brave, moving to a new place without finding out the basics first whilst you were there visiting. Good luck.

Must be one of the reason why the OP wants to leave Thailand... bis repetita! :)

Not really... I just want a change of scene and a bit of an adventure.

The most important thing, I can get to an airport within a few hours by car (have a sick father overseas) and I need internet access.

Smallish expat scene would be nice but not interested in bars every day... or bargirls.

Would be nice to get out in the sticks as far as possible but I need Internet.. very important

If you need all those things sounds like you need to be living in Thailand to me, but you may get a better idea from someone who had visited Cambodia several times.

I have no experience with Cambodia, but my son is currently teaching there. From his reports it sounds like power outages are much more common there, and internet for individuals is mostly dial-up.

Have you been to Kampot ?

I has a small expat scene, a few decent bars & restaraunts

If you are thinking of moving to Cambodia you realy want to spend a couple of months or more touring around checking out places before you make a serious commitment, taking into consideration when is the wet season, hospitals (if any), medical, public transport etc etc

Now, Phnom Penh is real city but not like Bangkok. I'd say like Chiang Mai. You can find anything.

Power outrage was in the 90's not nowadays.

ADSL is crazily too expensive at home but Internet cafe are very cheap. You can bring your laptop.

A friend of mine is living in Sihanoukville. He LOVED that. It's Pattaya, 40 years ago.

It looks boring to me but there is indeed an expat scene in this small city.

I'd not choose Siem Reap, 2 millions tourists / year in a small town. I guess no real expat life + EXPENSIVE in any way.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

My humble advise would be to visit Sihanoukville for a month ,sound the place out and if it suits your needs ,make your arrangements then make your move.

Most good hotels now have WIFI, (some free to guests ).

I maintain a small unit in S,ville which has its own generator,so power outages only last 1-2 minutes until the gen kicks in .

Stealing is about the only crime of consequence, just maintain decent security for your belongings and all is well, other dangers come under my heading of "if you look for trouble ,it will find you " otherwise its as safe as any other place.

Rents in PP are probably 150% higher than S,ville for equivalant properties.

Local banks atm,s access overseas accounts.

$120 per month +power and water will get you a nice little unit with separate bedroom, ensuite, cable tv,fans &air-con ,security etc. the good ones take a bit of sounding out ,so take a month to get a feel for the place and make your arrangements before the big move.you wont regret it I am sure.

I am not sure mate, I only use the net through boredom and as I am never bored in Snooky I stay away from it.

However, I do know people who use the web for their business in S,ville so it must be passable.

To each his own, I guess. Depending on one's respective lifestyles. If Cambodia was the place to 'resettle', and wanted to give a go regarding countryside living - try the northeast districts. Smaller townships, still unspoiled, etc. {internet is available}. Best of luck, Bones!! :)
