BANGKOK, Jan 25 (TNA) - Thailand's Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) on Monday ordered the temporary closure of schools where students reportedly contracted Influenza A(H1N1), and placed some 300 high-risk students across the country under close watch.

Special Affairs Bureau director Satchathorn Wattanamongkol of the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Education said that according to the weekly report on the A(H1N1) situation from January 18 to 23, laboratory test results confirmed nine students in OBEC schools were infected with the virus.

Of the nine, two are in the capital, three in Ayutthaya, two in Phrae, one each in Chaiyaphum and Narathiwat, said Mr Satchatorn.

He said that the ministry has also ordered the temporary closure of schools in Narathiwat and Phrae to contain the disease.

Mr Satchthorn said that 296 students in 23 OBEC schools in 14 provinces are also under close surveillance.

Contracting A(H1N1) since June 2008 were 2,708 students nationwide, but the situation can be contained and controlled despite the continued spread of new patients.

The education ministry has instructed provincial OBEC directors across the country to step up screening the measures in schools to detect A(H1N1) risk students, he said.

However there have been no reports of A(H1N1) in private schools. (TNA)

Three times this number of people die every day in road accidents (mainly those on motorbikes) I don't see any action being taken to restrict motorbike use amongst children and students.

Not true! My good mate works at an international school (RIS), and they just announced that they are closed for a week!

I work at a private school in -------- and we have had individual classrooms closed down over the last couple of weeks because the majority have come down with high fevers. No announcements have been given to the teachers. They have advertising signs everywhere telling how you should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, dry with tissues, and then turn off tap with tissue.

Trouble is they are reluctant to supply soap and tissue because it costs money so we have watered down liquid soap (if we are lucky to time it right) and the kids have to share one slimy towel per 300 odd students which is changed every day????!!!.

Correct,my Doctor back home always checks my records to see when I last had Antibiotics before prescribing a new

I hate it when I see people posting lies like this on the internet. If you want to spread bullshit like this at least give a link to some source that agrees with you. When I was a kid we were scared to death every summer because every year thousands of people, mostly kids, died and thousands more were paralyzed and doomed to spend the rest of their short lives in iron lungs. I remember when every year thousands of kids died from measles, and thousands more went blind or were lucky and just rendered sterile. I remember when kids had their tonsils cut out because doctors thought inflamed tonsils caused diphtheria. Mumps, whooping cough, are practically forgotten now -- they used to kill thousands every year.

It's kind of like making your kid wear a safety helmet when he/she is riding a bicycle. Sure, I never wore one, but over the course of my life thousands of kids died or ended up crippled from Traumatic Brain Injury. Some people think it makes them wimps, but at least more of them manage to grow up.

I hate the big pharmaceutical companies, but that's because they make billions selling Prozac and Viagra to people who don't need them. I hate them because they keep prices jacked up long after they've recovered their development costs and paid for development of drugs that didn't work out. I hate them because they pay their top executives, who don't really contribute anything, hundreds of times what they pay their regular workers. But don't come out here and lie that vaccines haven't saved millions of lives and prevented millions more from being crippled.

There are lots of people in the rich countries now who grew up after vaccines became regular childhood medications and don't remember what it was like when these "childhood illnesses" killed hundreds of thousands or millions each year. They're wrong. So are you.

Though I can not and will not account for ALL private schools as has been mentioned in this post that ... at the PRIVATE school I work at here in Chiang Mai we still subject all our students, all staff both Thai and Farang, including the bus drivers, kitchen staff and gardening and security staff...in short everyone who requires entrance to our campus to get a temperature check...we have never discontinued this daily routine since we first introduced it shortly after the outbreak was initially reported...many months ago! The few cases we did have were immediately reported and the students were first isolated, the parents duly informed and the students were then admitted to the local hospital where they underwent the whole battery of tests and treatment lasting approx. 10 days. They were 'medically' released and only then permitted back on campus.

I don't think I have what it takes to can sit here reading your baseless assumptions any longer.

By the way, for you 'know-it-alls' out there....we, our International School never lost a student in fact we attracted a few more due to us being proactive. Not ALL private Schools are what you "know-it-alls" claim them to be.....it's just like claiming ALL Germans are Nazis or ALL Frangs living here are running from somebody or something....ALL...ALL...ALL! Watch how you use the word ALL, EVERYONE, ALWAYS, NEVER and try and exercise some respected level of maturity and sensitivity while sharing your opinions in this anonymous yet very public forum......I enjoy reading other opinions and points-of-view, it's the claiming to "have all the answers" part that really gets to me!

The UK Government cannot cope with more than one crisis at a time. With the economy in dire straits, questions have been asked about the cost of the vaccination programmes, particularly when they didn't have enough salt and grit for the icy conditions.

No. It is making the surplus available. It was believed that 2 doses of vaccine would be required, however, 1 dose is sufficient.

The error was made on the side of safety. Better an error like that insufficient quantities.At the time of the order, no one knew one does would suffice. You forget that people were panicing and demanding action. The decision to order vaccines was not one done for fun.
