Any Information About Toyota Recalls?

The above post is the advise that came out of a recent case in Victoria, Australia, where a Ford SUV cruise control apparently jammed on, (luckily he was on a freeway), and the driver was unable to stop the vehicle for some 15 km. Was talking to the police on his mobile, and had a police escort for a while too. Widely reported in the press over there. Very odd, and no-one has yet come up with an explanation yet, as far as I know.

It's important for everyon to know. If you get conronted with this problem and the gaspedal (trottle) want get back, shift the gear stick imidently in "N" Neutral position and shut down the engine (ignition switch), only in accessory position. Don't remove the key, otherwise you are not beable to control the steering wheel anymore.

Just to expand on Stingray's excellent post:

Manual gearshift:

Depress clutch pedal

Brake or swerve if necessary

When safe, turn the ignition switch to Acc. and select neutral.

Don't remove key, or the steering will lock!

The motor may scream it's head off until the ignition is turned off, but the rev limiter should prevent damage.

Auto:

Knock into neutral

Break or swerve if necessary

When safe, turn the ignition switch to Acc.

engine should not be switched off (key or start/stop button), before vehicle is parked. to keep power steering and brakes working, and to focus completely on a safe stop/park. rev limiter will avoid damage on engine

Honda are also recalling 650000 jazzs for window switch problems where some child died in a car fire started by water entering the master window switch. In India they are saying it only affects the OLD jazz not the new model but i cant find out if this is correct for the Thai model. Anyone know if Thailands "NEW" JAzz is affected?

Seems like there is a temporary fix involving a "spacer" near the pedal, I'm not going technical into it because I just heard it on CNN and the reporter is not a mechanic. Basically, CNN just reporting that Toyota has released a full page ad in the US and Canada. In the coming days, Toyota will be releasing another statement regarding this.

A Vios auto gear 2006 I once used commonly got the throttle stuck under the floor mat. No floor mat hooks available then. Usually happened when I jumped in the drivers seat at start and pushed the mat over the throttle, then turned on the ignition. Once or twice on the road driving. A design fault if ever there was one.

So YOU know that there's a potential problem and don't do anything to resolve it YOUSELF and it's a desgn issue?

I wonder what those guys in those cars that had someone walk in front of them with a red flag used as an excuse? The floor mat ot stuck under the gas peddle?????????????????

It's not about the floormat. Last night they showed on BBC News: There is a spring in the mechanism who have to be repaced. This would be more serous than a floormat.

To PattayaParent my dear lady. I guess you have completely misread my post my concluding I did nothing? I don't recall saying I did nothing. That would be insane. I took the darned floor mat out, it was really that easy!

To Stingray, in the Thailand 2006 Vios auto it is the floor mat. The US cars are a different issue.

The BBC is reporting Peugeot is carrying out an identical recall for under 100,000 Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s made in a joint venture with Toyota. The cars are made in Kolin, east of Prague mainly for the European market.

I'm so sick and tired of all the lying in this country.

According to the page "http://www.bangkokpost.com/business/economics/31927/toyota-says-us-recall-has-no-impact-on-models-in-thai-market" the Toyota spokesperson said that the issue is caused by floor mats.

This is clearly not true.

"The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper “feel” by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable.

This friction device includes a “shoe” that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation. Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly. In some cases, friction could increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open."

I guess Thai lives are not as valuable as American ones.

Where the friction device is located is most certainly not associated with the rubber floor mat, as replacement parts are in route to all Toyota dealers, as per US news releases. The statements put out by the dealers in Thailand would seem to contradict the Japan Toyota solution but as this is Thailand we have our own solutions when and if a problem (what problem) should arise.

The statements put out by the dealers in Thailand would seem to contradict the Japan Toyota solution but as this is Thailand we have our own solutions when and if a problem (what problem) should arise.

I'm not holding my breath... I seriously doubt Toyota Thailand will issue anything that will cost them money. Unfortunately, lives will have to be lost before they take any "pro-active" action.

This new model has an accelerator that goes wild but only under certain conditions of cruise control. And I can repeat it over and over and over again--safely."

"This is software. It's not a bad accelerator pedal. It's very scary, but luckily for me I can hit the brakes," he said.

And now, to add to this, there are reports of brake problems with the Prius!

Japan's Transport Ministry has reportedly received 12 complaints, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the United States has reportedly received more than 100 complaints about the brakes of the new Prius.

Possibly of relevance to Thailand, Toyota Australia has said it's cars are not affected by the recall. Toyota Australia imports many of the smaller Toyotas (not the Camry) from Thailand.

I just saw the Prius report on CNN.

I wonder how would Toyota Thailand or Australia determine that their cars are not affected? Are they using a different mechanism/mechanics all together?, a totally of different design than other markets?.. I mean, I would expect the same accelerator design/material/schematics to be used worldwide. Maybe us Thai foots are so different they had to re-design it completely.... not to mention the Aussies foots as well.

Not a good year for Toyota.... then again, the year is still young.... a lot can happen.
