Dual Passports

Featured Replies

Wanting to return to Thailand and settle down. My Thai wife will have her US citizenship so will have two passports. We will want to visit US at times so need advice on what passport to use. Have gotten conflicting info. Any good advice would be appreciated

Enter and depart the US on the US passport.

Enter and depart Thailand on the Thai passport.

Tip - when your wife enters on the Thai passport, you can go with her to the Thai passport counter, saves a lot of time queuing up at the foreign passport counter.

Does your wife have your last name on both passports? If not, it gets a little more confusing during checkin. We had this problem, so had her change her last name on her Thai passport. Otherwise at checkin, she is showing a Thai passport with a Thai last name and a ticket with a western last name. Not really a big deal, but did cause problems when we traveled to Bali, I booked the tix online and used my last name. She only took her old Thai passport with her...took some time to get that sorted out...

Everyone I know with both passports does this. Well worth the effort of maintaining both; eliminates the immigration issue.

took me longer to get through thai counter, than foreign one last time i entered, seemed to take ages with the thai people and only 4 or 5 in front of me,fussy imigration guy.

When leaving Thailand, she will need to show the US passport to the airline when checking in to prove she can enter the US, but give the Thai passport to Immigration. No need to show Immigration the US passport.

When leaving the US, do check-in with US pasport (no exit immigration) and use Thai passport to enter Thailand.
