Man Killed In Late Night Road Crash In East Pattaya

Featured Replies

Late on Wednesday Night, Police and Rescue Services were called to the scene of a fatal road accident in Soi Maptado which is a long and poorly lit stretch of road running from Soi Neun Plub Wan down to Soi Kow Tha Low in Jomtien. The accident involved a 4×4 Toyota Sport-rider, driven by Khun Saiyan aged 31 and a motorbike driven by a Thai Man who was carrying no forms of identification. Khun Saiyan explained that he was driving along when the motorbike suddenly pulled out onto the main road. He was unable to brake in time and collided with the motorbike which led to the death of its driver. Police took Khun Saiyan away for questioning and although it is thought he was driving safely and within the speed limit, he may be charged over the incident.

In the Uk you are driving "safely" when you can stop in time, even if they break suddenly or pull into the road in front of you. All other times you are driving too fast for the road conditions. Also looking at the damage to the car I wonder what the speed limit was that he was driving within.

My understanding is one should always drive with "Due Care and Attention" and always consider that other road users may do things unexpectedly, and that does mean considering other road users particularly at road junctions (but slowing down for other vehicles which do not have right of way may be hazardous as they may think you intend to let them out).

in this instance if it is the story already posted here there probably was only 3 witnesses, The first is no longer able to tell his side of the story, another was "sitting in the back talking on the phone to a member of staff in the UK, not paying any attention to what was going on arround" so actually saw nothing, the third the driver of the 4x4 so apart from any forensic evidence collected, such as had either divers been drinking? what had been the speeds of both vehicles? who had right of way? had both vehicle lights on? how far from the point of impact where either vehicle aware of the other vehicle? did the biker have, and was wearing a crash helmet? it would be very hard to actually form a conclusive and true opinion of what actually happened, indeed there are a lot of questions to be answered before anyone can point a finger of blame.

another issue raised was the quote from the owner of the vehicle which was being used a taxi "don't worry, the dead man is Cambodian, no problem!" I am sorry but in my opinion the value of life is the same regardless of their nationality and if anyone knows the name of this taxi company please post as I will do all I can to avoid using them and I am sure others will as be thinking like me...

Scooters drive terribly around here. Most pulling out onto the road without looking...thinking you will avoid them. Not a good tactic when it is at night...especially when many scooters never even turn their lights on! I am amazed at how many scooter accidents I see each week...
