Newbie: Some of the ATM's don't charge the 150 baht fee.

They have fine print that tells you instead they dick with the exchange rate.

It's even far worse than the 150 baht fee.

That yellow one is one of them.

I think you are right concerning use of MASTERCARD in Ayyuthaya Bank's ATM's: 'The Yellow ones'.

So potential ATM users in Thailand beware of this.

Bangkok bank ATM allow you to withdraw 25000 baht with a foreign credit or debit card all the others I think only allow 20000 baht and all now I think have the 150 baht surcharge

all ayutthaya atms are free of the 150 charge

I HAVE also used Bank of Ayuthea ATM 's in 3 different provinces this week, inc. Bangkok and all were CHARGE FREE. They also gave the Visa rate so the earlier comment about dodgy exchange rates is WRONG.

The solution to not payiing the THB 150 ATM fee is simply not to use an ATM! Whereas ATM's have a limit on foreign cards - usually THB 20,000, there is no limit on a credit card advance (this includes debit cards) where the transaction is done across the bank counter - i.e. not through an ATM.

So all you need to do is pick a value higher than the maximum an ATM will give you - say THB 25,000 or THB 30,000 then just head to a bank or exchange booth, armed with your card & your passport and tell them how much you want & a couple of minutes later, it's all approved & the cash is handed over - with NO fee or charge. So no ATM THB 150 fee payable. Easy.

Yep....and just hope they don't skim your card, and memorise your 3 digit security code. No thanks.

Ayutthaya bank ("yellow bank") ATM's don't charge a fee? That's not true. I have been using Ayutthaya ATM's for a while now. Here in ChiangMai there is only 1 Ayutthaya ATM that doesn't charge the 150 baht fee. All the other Ayutthaya ATM's do charge it. Maybe because I don't use Visa or Mastercard, I use Maestro. ??

There's some seriously mis-informed folks here... Let's try to straighten this out...

1. The only ATMs at Suvarnabhumi Airport belong to Siam Commercial and Thai Military Bank, and both of those charge the 150 baht fee for withdrawals using non-Thai bank cards.

There is a SCB ATM there en-route to the departures area that dispenses U.S. currency, but I don't know what its fee situation is.

2. Elsewhere in Thailand, AEON ATMs are the only ones that are consistently fee-free for foreign ATM cards.

3. Bank of Ayudhya ATMs (the yellow bank) are a bit of a headache.

The bad: For MasterCard logo cards based in Euros and U.S. $, their ATMs do what's called dynamic currency conversion, meaning they give you a BofA-set exceptionally bad exchange rate. (BofA supposedly gives the regular, better network exchange rate for VISA cards).

The good: for some European folks, particularly Brits, for some unknown reason, their ATM cards seem to escape the BofA withdrawal fee. Some Germans and a few other nationalities have reported similar experiences. But I haven't heard of any Americans getting that break from BofA. So depending on where you're from, YMMV with Bank of Ayudhya.

4. Government Savings Bank (GSB), the pink one, used to be fee-free even after most of the others like Bangkok Bank, SCB and Kasikorn went over to charging the fee. But, as one poster above reported, that deal ended some months back. So now they're the same as everyone else.

So, to recap, anyone can use AEON ATMs in Thailand without paying the 150 baht withdrawal fee. And depending on what country you're from and what kind of card you're using, you might get a pass with Bank of Ayudhya...but you also might get the fee or a lousy exchange rate.

Over the last couple of weeks, I used my Nationwide visa debit card in various Bank of Ayudyha ATM machines and didn't get charged the 150b. 2 locations in Bangkok and 4 in Lamai, Ko Samui. The rate seems to check out - it was the Visa official rate minus the 1% VISA network fee which Nationwide passes on to the customer.

A friend of mine used his Mastercard credit card in some BoA machines and did get charged a 150 baht access fee so go figure....
