Just spent a few days in Nakhon Phanom and quite liked it. I've visited a lot of towns and cities in Isaan and NP has risen well up the list. Pretty setting and at Lao border. I'll be retiring this summer and will revisit the place, but I have a few questions if anyone lives there, although I haven't seen anyone posting from there in TV.

1. What's the internet service like? Same same Thailand?

2. Does the place get flooded in rainy season?

3. It was quite "cool" when I was there, down to 18-20 at night. But how hot does it get?

4. And last and most serious question: Can one get espresso :)

Thanks lads and ladies.

Hello KB,

In reference to your questions:

1 - I'm 11KM outside the city and have 2MB connection (that's the max for this area), but have been told by TOT it's 4MB in the city. Also stated it will get quicker just give us time.

2 - Heavy rain yesterday and today, no noticeable flooding in the village or on highway 22 near the village.

3 - Hit 41 last week, the hottest I've seen here, but this has been a one off, but regularly mid 30's. Although cold today due to the rain and wind.

4 - Sorry I'm not a coffee drinker, but many Bon Cafe signs about in the cafe's, so I'm assuming readily available.

Hope this helps.

Hello Kaoboi,

Welcome in NP. I always call it Little Bangkok, but this is slightly exaggerated. It is a friendly town where you have everything at hand. Regards the internet, I use a USB stick itself (Catt Telecom), but that is very slow in the village where I live. In NP, it is a lot faster. Moreover you have several good places cappocino drinking, so expresso's will there also be. The temperature can indeed run high but I have not experienced flooding. There is also a very good and cheap hotel in NP, the SP Hotel. Central location. Occasionally you come to a farang. Most likely in the electricity business in the mainstreet (very amiable owner).

If you need more information, I notice that by itself. Incidentally, I come from Netherlands.

Robbo and Marcel, thanks for pitching in your comments. I received two very detailed PMs about three months ago now. Now, adding in your contributions, all the info looks very positive. I'll be up that way in October, I think. Marcel, thanks for the hotel tip.

nakhon has everything you desire, airport with dayly flight to bkk, immigraion office with one stop service (I never got a problem with them).

no floading in the area, no starbuck but coffie have. many shops who can provide almost everything, or they order for you in bkk.

tesco lotus (farang food very poor) no fresh market at tesco, have to go to the local marked or cp fresh marked also in towmn.

a bigger tesco in that phanom and sakon nakhon has big c and macro,

we always make a trip to sakon every month to get the fridge filled up.

temp always a cool wind from the mekomg temp basic between 30-35 c.

land and houses are quite cheep to get or build.

it is not pattaya or phuket, so dont expect nightlife arond here.

Please stick to the thread (4 questions asked by the OP) rather than a gossipy discussion of a fight between a foreigner and his ladyboy.

Not correct, Nok Air fly to Nakhon Phanom five days a week, no flights on a Tuesday or Saturday.

Anybody else know this entertaining double act in Nakhon Phanom?

I think all falangs in Nakhon Phanom know them, or of them. The police were on the local radio station months back telling them they did not want to be involved in their domestic situations, they had more important things to concentrate on.

Thank you

If they are as well known around NP as Ragandboneman suggests, then it certainly has a bearing on anyone wanting to know a bit about the town and looking for information about the place before considering setting down roots there. For a start, there is a danger that this guy has set a standard against which some Thais may unfortunately judge farangs coming to live there and secondly, bear in mind that you maybe dragged into their domestic disputes unwittingly, by merely being within spitting distance of this charming couple. I know I was and had to move tables to avoid being either hit by the katoey's truncheon or a tile flung by the hen/cock?-pecked husband.

Lastly, I should add, I would make darn sure that they are not your neighbours before you decide to move there or you could be in for some sleepless nights!
