What determines the province assigned to a new car license plate? Is it the address of the dealership, the residence of the buyer or just the address of the land transport office where you register the car?

it's the address of the dealer. so if you live in a different province to the dealer you will have to change the licence plate at later date. pretty simple. and about 350baht. tip unless you read Thai take someone that dose and it will be a doddle. they also give you a new tax disc normaly have to go back the next day to have all the bit's put on the car. if you need more info ask as ive just done it so pretty clued up

Yes what fred said. I bought new in Bangkok and live in Phuket. (Cheaper and better selection) I am told that at the 1 year mark, when I need to renew the tax disk, to change Provence to Phuket. No problem in the mean time.

No, its the Land Transport Office chosen to register car. Dealers or buyers adress doesnt matter.

If you buy in BKK and want Phuket plate, dealer can send all docs to you and you go to LTD in Phuket and get Phuket reg as first reg. Done it several times, purchased in BKK and Petchburi (better price and availability) but reg in Phuket. If you want to do this, make sure you dont pay regfee (tax/plate etc) to dealer, pay it yourself to LTD.

Yes but what aload of faffing about. it mean's you have no reg: plate's so cant take car out of province.

you have to sort it all out yourself, and you know what that can entail. if your cleaver you can do a deal with the dealer and get him to pay for it, you can also get the red plate that give's you more option's, and why do it any way as it's only a reg: change not a second owner on the the log book so make's no differance to resail price it also give's you up to a year to change it . Oh and by the way it is where the dealer is, as he has to use his local LTD office.

and to get a new plate ect you have to show your blue book or other writen confirmation, that you live in the district. so buyers address dose matter.

I have my pickup registered in Chonburi where I bought it. The car is registered in Loei where I bought it. While at the motor vehicle bureau in Loei, I mentioned registering the pickup there too because we live in Loei. The lady at the counter looked at me strangely and asked me why I would want to change it. I have never changed it and have never been questioned. As far as renewing the registration, my insurance man takes care of it so that's not a problem either.

dealer can reg in any LTD/Province they want, not only their local LTD. they would usually require a fee to do so, but I have done it myself on occasions. dealer/manufactorer fill out all forms, I just provide passport, Certificate of Residence and pay tax/plates. max 1 hour at local LTD, no hazzle, and if you smile nicely you get to choose number :)

buyer can have NEW vehicle reg in any LTD/province in LOS, buyers adress (Certificate of Residence) does not matter.

Vehicle already registered: when change of ownership buyer will usually be asked by LTD to move reg to buyers local LTD. In Phuket this is required.

any new vehicle with legal redplates/redplatebook can be used legally in any province in LOS for 90 days.

The main issue you will have is if you wish to sell the car as you can only sell it (legally) in the province it is registered. I purchased my previous car in Bangkok and drove for a year with Bangkok plates in Chiangmai before deciding to change registration to Chiangmai. Had no problems using the out of province plates.

Since it is the LTD where the formal registration of the vehicle takes place, that is where the province of registration information for the blue book will come from. The buyer has to only supply proof of address, in my case it was my WP which shows my Chiangmai address and not Bangkok.

rule's changed a couple of month's ago the no: plate has to be where the owner live's, not sure where you live or what plate you have. but both have to match Ie if you live in Loei the no: plate has to say Loei but as this is Thailand who know's but that the LAW

used car or bike can be sold legally in any province. then go to your local LTD, they have reg moved to your province, new local regno frontpage book and new plates. 7-10 days and a few hundred baht. done it some times

Hmm..they never even gave me that as an option.

K-Motors, but cant recall if they offered it or I demanded it. 1 Camry and 1 Vigo from them, both purchased by fax and deposit by ATM

actually you cant change reg plates as long as your car is financed. or you can, but then you have to pay financecompany a fee (3-5k baht) to provide docs and book.

I didn't know that either. Looks like my car will be staying on Bangkok plates then. makes sense since they keep the book. I have a copy that shows my name in it though.

I also bought through K motors. They have over 200 dealers in Bangkok alone, (although some are very very small). I'm pretty sure they are the biggest in terms of number of dealers. I'm pretty happy with my guy. Got us a great price on the exact car I wanted no waiting and lots of free extra's with great customer service. All things that in my experience the two Pearl Toyotas of Phuket can not do. Anyone that wants his info, PM me.

Actually took delivery from Pearl Phuket in November. They finally matched K Motors quote, approx 70k free/discount on 950k Vigo.
