Utorrent Issue At Home

Featured Replies

Hey there,

I've been using utorrent in Thailand, and it's been pretty good. Recently though I moved into this apartment and I've been experiencing some problems.

Basically, I can't download a torrent from scratch at home, but if I start it at work and bring my laptop home it seems to work fine. So, the problem is getting new torrents when I'm not going to work every day (they show up as red in utorrent).

It's an inhouse wireless connection at my apartment complex, and I think the provider is TAT. Anyone experienced similar problems?

Thanks :)

It is quite possible that it is due to the in house network not forwarding your torrent port, as you would do with your own router and Internet connection.

Without port forwarding your uTorrent client will have trouble finding new seeders

If you look to the bottom of the uTorrent GUI you should see a green tick i the middle but if instead you see either a yellow triangle or a red cross then you have a port forwarding problem. You could check your prefernce to see if uPnP is enabled and if so that should automatically configure port forwarding if the wireless router supports it. The other option is to talk to the building manager and see if they will set up port forwarding or port triggering. Port triggering is again an automatic port forwarding setting but done from the router rather than the PC.

hi thaimite,

nope, there is a green tick at the bottom, which reads 'your network connection is working as it should' when I aim the cursor over it. also, uPnP port mapping is enabled in the options.

It's a weird one. All I can think of is maybe your ISP at home (or whoever controls your network) is blocking the download of .torrent files to the extent that they're somehow getting corrupted. Have you tried using a tracker that allows you to download them as .txt files? e.g. Demoniod.

how does that work?

Download the .txt file and change the extension to .torrent

Download the .txt file and change the extension to .torrent

ok, will have a go at that.

update... the green tick at the bottom has just turned into a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark. this is after i tried to download a new torrent, but the other torrents that were downloading previously are still downloading as normal.

hi MKAsok,

followed your instructions, but same same...

Very weird.

If the .torrent was the problem the the torrent file would not download.

If it was the ISP blocking torrents then torrents started at another location would not download (always a good idea to set the torrent encryption on anyway)

You say the port forwarding is working. I have seen green ticks when it does not work, but not often. You can run the diagnostic test to double check.

It is obviously not able to connect to the trackers of a new torrent and get new seeds.

Have you tried enabling the DHT which will by pass the trackers and go direct to other seeds? This is a work around rather than a cure. DHT torrents can take 30 minutes or more to find trackers.

Final thought (grasping at straws here) is maybe your IP address is blocked by your torrent sourcer if you are a private tracker.

Please let us all know when you get it solved.

What error message are you getting from the tracker?

i'm not sure if this is what you're refering to, but in the 'trackers' tab it reads as follows:

[DHT] - waiting for announcement

[Local Peer Discovery] - working

[Peer Exchange] - working

http://inferno.... - offline (timed out)

---

no seeds, peers or downloads in either column on the far right.

What port is uTorrent using? Find out from the settings and check it at http://www.utorrent.com/testport?port=xxxxx where xxxxx is the port number (enter it yourself).

Edit: I wouldn't recommend DHT as suggested above if you're using private trackers.

Iquite agree although my private trackers seem to disable DHT for their torrents.

It looks as if you cannot access the tracker (timed out) Is it a private tracker? Maybe it is blocked by TAT. Do you get this fault with torrents from other trackers?

I keep getting this message when checking different port settings on that website (each time it's a different port)...

An error has occurred!

Port xxxxx does not appear to be open.

---

Also, I've both enabled and disabled the DHT settings but nothing either way.

You need to map a port.

Edit: You'll also need to keep the same port after mapping, so turn off the random port setting.

yes i get it with every torrent. if the server is reset in the building then i have to wait until i connect to the internet at work for it to be able to resume. then i bring the computer back home and, after downloading some from the work connection, i can resume downloads as normal from home.

what is a private tracker?

.

I've occasionally seen a similar problem with uTorrent.

What I've done to get around it is to highlight the problem torrent in the upper window, then click the "Files" button above the lower window.

Right-click the file name ( or highlight all the file names if there are multiple files ), then right-click and select "High Priority"

If that doesn't fix the problem, highlight the Torrent in the upper window, right-click and select "Force Start"

This work-around will likely be challenged by others, but it works for me.

.

If you are not using your own modem then you may find that they do not want you using up there bandwidth and they have there modem password protected. Normally if you use a web browser and your IP address is eg 192.168.1.xx (find this using network connection status. type in 192.168.x.1 which normally will be your modem to set up port forwarding. The program below will also do this for you.

Great program for seeing up the port forwarding. http://www.simpleportforwarding.com/

Good Luck

some good advice here - thanks all.

i went downstairs and tried to find the router. there are a couple of machines in a box with a glass front, and the door is locked. i think the make is a zyXEL but I can't see the specific model, though i might be able to match it with the pictures in the port forwarding program. but do i need some kind of password from the apartment people to proceed further? if so, i don't think i'd be able to get that.

Sorry to hear you are still struggling. Again my only suggestion is to turn on DHT which is supposed to get round problems like this by doing away for the need for a tracker, although it can be very slow to start

See this link or do a Google for more information

You're screwed if you can't get into the router. And yeah, you'll almost certainly need a password unless they've left it on the default (unlikely) and even then it's probably not a great idea to mess about with someone else's gear without permission. Consider getting your own connection if at all possible.
