Just Arrived And Need Quick Help

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Well, I have arrived. First question:

1.) Are there any lockers where I can put my tiny duffel bag during the day, or are these things not common in this country due to theft? In Tokyo there are lockers in all train stations and other areas where you can leave your bag all day long for about $3.

2.) Can anyone recommend a good place where I Can buy cheap jeans. The kick is that I want to try on the jeans before I purchase, so this may eliminate outside vendors. Any suggestions?

3.) With street vendors, those that don't have the prices of their food listed (alot of them), should I expect that they'll try to charge me more than they charge the locals?

4.) What is the neares train station to Khao San road? Once I get to the station, shall I walk or take a taxi or bus to Khao San Road?

BTW, for those that didn'yt check my other thread, its not that I want to be extremely cheap, its just that I only have a certain amount of money.

1 - I don't know of any, you might try left luggage at a rail way station.

2 - Try the MBK shopping centre near Siam (Siam BTS station), it's where a lot of Thai's shop and there's lots of choice. MBK is pronounced phonetically as Mar Boon Krong, very well known.

3 - Yes, sometimes, depends where you are, try and figure out costs before you order.

4 - No idea, sorry.

1. Friendly hotels will store a suitcase at a very good rate if not for free if they like you.

2. Tesco Lotus sells MC brand jeans for 650 baht.

3. Get away from Khao San Road and once everyone gets to know you, expect to pay 25 baht for a nice plate of khao pah gai.

4. No idea, never been there. That main Humpalong terminal can't be too far from the river.

Glad to read that you made it and best of luck in your amazingly sanuk travels.

1. Hualamphong train station does storage (20 baht/piece), but don't expect locker... so don't leave valuables (if you've got any) in your bag.

2. Take a motorbike-taxi to Siraraj Hospital (40 baht), arriving there ask, for the flee market it's located south in the covered sub sois, you will find a lot of rejected clothes from garment factories.

3. Watch what the locales are eating and how much they are paying... order the same and pay the same.

4. See #2, from there, take a ferry (3baht) to cross the river (to Thammasat University) and then walk (15 minutes) to Thanon Kaosan.

P.S.: may I suggest you to register as well on the traveler "bible" forum because your inquiries are becoming tedious. :)

Not this buffoon! Its been spamming LPTT as well!

-I only went to the Thorn Tree forums cuz I was directed by people on this forum.

-They may offer diffent info. than people here. Knowledge is power.

-I am not spamming as I am not selling a service or promoting a website.

-I am not hiding the fact that I'm on the other forum(s). I didn't sign up under a different s/n or anything. No shame and nothing to hide here.

1 - no clue, I'd try a nice hotel - no need to worry about theft

2 - MBK (BTS National Stadium)

3 - If they are gonna charge you more than locals they will do so whether you ask the price before or pay what they tell you at the end. It's not like the taxi scam where they'll try to charge you 1000 baht for some noodles, they'll rip you off by 10 baht or something. Just order, eat, and pay what they ask for.

4 - No clue but I've heard the trains in Thailand suck big time - I'd take a VIP bus from kho sarn, wherever you are headed

Pretty much as Britmaverick and Yantree say-

1. No, not like the ones you're thinking about

2. MBK, but they'll still be in the neighborhood of 700-1000B each- outside your budget

3. No, just pretend you already know (might be hard if you can't order in Thai, though) or watch what other customers pay

4. No train station that's really close to KSR- you could go to Huamlumphong (either by national Rail or by subway) and that's probably the cheapest place to catch a taxi, if you get a real taxi. Don't talk to anyone waiting by the station; move out into traffic until you catch a taxi that's already moving and has its 'free' light on.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. That MBK thing does seem out of my price-range, but I only need to styore 1 bag, so if I really need to do it and don't have another option, I may consider it.

Regarding item number 2.

Jeans to use only when you are here, or quality jeans to bring home?

If jeans only to use while you are here, make sure you never buy them inside a mall.

Normally plenty stalls around the malls (and in markeds), where you can buy them for 1/3 of the price.
