Need Help With Thai Names For Plants

Featured Replies

Please help if you can,

Need to know what name to give when shopping for the plants Cestrum Nocturnum Night Flowering Jasmine

I have heard "Ratree" and "Malee" and "Kannika" are possible Thai names for it. India nickname is "Queen of The Night"

and Cestrum Diurnum Day Jessamine, no idea what it is called in Thai, could not find a translation for it in the Melb Univ Plant database. India nickname is "King of the Day".

Rural wisdom in India holds that the Jasmine, for all its lovely aroma, is said to attract snakes, but that planting the day jessamine with it tends to keep snakes away, and the Day jessamine is a haven for butterflies. I don't have personal experience with either, but I love the smell of both, and want to plant them around the house in Jomtien.

I don't know much of the Thai language yet, so anyone who can help with the Thai names, its very much appreciated.

I do not know the Thai names but I have a few books (like Tropical Plants for Home and Garden by William Warren) which had pictures of the plants you mentioned...showed it to the nursery named Bhulun near the end of Soi Neurnplabwan on the right as you head away from town. Don't fret too much about Thai names, although it will help of course to know them, because pointing to photos seem to work as well! I was advised against Queen of the Night not because it attracted snakes but because the strong perfume at night might attract spirits! I also found the stalls at the weekend plant market on Sukhumvit (opposite BKK Pattaya Hospital) are also very receptive to the "point at photo" method of plant buying.

Good luck!

I don't know if you've got a printer, but just find the Wikipedia page for the cestrum nocturum and on the left side of the page under 'languages' you'll find a link to the Thai website http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umB1XN1fh9g

Use Google!

enter Cestrum nocturnum or Cestrum diurnum and select "search sites in Thailand".

You'll get many results. Mostly the ones from Kasetsart (ku) are the best and most accurate.
