Man killed in crane collapse

Pattaya Mail: Narisa Nitikarn

A crane collapsed and killed a workman on May 3 at a site on Pattaya Second Road, opposite the Hard Rock Hotel.

Police arriving at the scene found a yellow crane with the name Ch. Crane. The crane’s jib, which when fully extended was the height of a 10-storey building, had broken in half. One piece had stuck in a tree while the other had fallen to the ground, damaging a six-wheel Isuzu and commercial premises. One man, Saengpetch Tansing, age 39, was injured. He was rushed to Pattaya Memorial Hospital, where he was found to have fractures to his spleen and ribs. Despite the attention of the medical team, they could not save his life.

The crane jib broke in half causing one death and damage to three commercial rooms.

Police investigations revealed that an employer, known only as Yai Pa from Sriracha, had ordered the illegal cutting down of two para rubber trees for the price of 10,000 baht. The trees are protected. The contractor rented a crane from the Ch. Crane Transport Company for the price of 8,000 baht to cut the trees, which were 10 storeys high with 60cm diameter trunks.

One witness stated that the crane driver said before starting his work that he didn’t have familiarity with this crane, but work continued. The crane could not support the tree because of the heavy weight. The jib broke and fell, along with the basket containing Saengpetch, fatally injuring him. The crane operator fled the scene.

The commercial premises that were damaged were Tik Tailor’s and two rooms of the Phathomchai Laundry. Somporn Sakayang, owner of the building, said he was not yet able to estimate the cost of the damage.

I didn't know you could facture your spleen.

One does not facture or fracture the spleen.

The correct term is rupture of the spleen or a ruptured spleen.

The patient normally dies due to hypovolemic shock (Fluid Loss)

Some times hard to diagnose when external injuries are present and obvious gets Rx: (Treated First) mechanism of injury would have in this case indicated suspected internal injuries.

If no signs of exterior injury assume internal injury look at the patients face.

Pale cold and clammy if conscious complaing of thirst.

(UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE FLUID BY MOUTH)

After doing your safety, response, airway, breathing, circulation primary survey.

When carrying out the secondry head to toe survey you should notice swelling of the belly, hardness and tender to touch. Pulse is another indicator no visual signs ie; blood pooling, a pulse under 60 beats per minute taking into account the mechanism of injury, history, signs and symtoms.

Remember Hx: (history includes) any thing like past medical Hx: (history) Allergies does he or she have asthma, diabetes and so on.

Signs are what you see! Symtoms are what the patient can tell you.

If they are unconscious it's back to the mechanism of injury. What Happened.

A high fall suspect internal injuries

You can live without your spleen but you do need urgent Rx: (treatment) for any high impact injury.

Until we have a national 111/911/000 Emergency response call centre and proper trained pre hospital emergency care technicians and paramedics these possibly unnessary deaths will continue I personally favour 111 they the first digits on a touch phone, easy to teach a youngster what to do in the need of emergency help also easy for the visually impaired.

Sadly he would have been very uncomfortable had the guy survived. With those kind of injuries, I'd rather die.

My brother in law suffered similar injuries after a motorcy accident. He lived, had his spleen removed etc etc.

He is now in prison on a murder charge in Aust.

Sometimes one wonders if saving folks is worth it :o

But, mind you that is just one case. a lot of people do deserve a second chance.

Try the anger factor on the druken driver who kills/murders a child on a pedestrian crossing or takes out half a family in road traffic accident.

It's hard not to say it doesn't affect you.

Every incident involving death does especially children.

It's that eternal question!

Why?

Friend of mine ruptured his spleen in a rugby match - had it removed with no trouble. In the same match I cracked a couple of ribs.

Neither injury life-threatening if treated properly, heal quickly(ten days for me, a month to six weeks for Charlie), so why would you rather die? Life just sucks at the moment? Stop whinging, get out and enjoy yourself.

I had an extensive response to this. Obvious was not to be as in The Preview post I lost it.

In summary Humphrey B Bear should be considered an Australian treasure he has been educating pre schoolers since the 60's "Look right, Look left. Look right again and if all clear cross the road safely holding hands". The ruptured spleen depending on severity of injury can be repaired even partially removed. Another important factor is reassurance it's amazing what a squeeze of the hand and explaining what's happened and what you are doing. The last sense go in unconscius patients is hearing.

Humphrey is right enjoy your life to the full. Follow some of Humphrey's and Ronald McDonald's street smarts like wearing seat belts and teaching your children Stranger Danger.

Humphrey I Love That attitude and my daughter loves you on TV too!

I most cases people don't die directly of their injuries they die from airway obstruction or shock. There are different types of shock and this is not a 1st year Med School lecture/forum.

Thanks Humphrey B Bear!

Another great example of improvisation when a crane operator's professional skills were required for the job, which was illegal. :o

Picture: Crane caught off balance

Happens to professionals too penzman but you are right.

Work place Safety

Can you remember when they made seat belts law in your country.

Same scenario it's a huge attitude education campaign and it has to start at the top.

Like trying to get them to wear safety cap boots and hard hats.

A huge billion$ business to be made. All investors welcome. From eye protection, ear, breathing, gloves the list is endless.

Plus the income from lectures and change management attitude campaigns.

Frustrating when you know how it should and could be done.

Then we have the Mai Pen Rai TIT excuse!!

I just can't get my head around getting the photo here

This crane was upended yesterday morning while lifting a concrete slab at a building site on Forges Rd, Silverdale, north of Auckland.

The crane, which belongs to On Call Cranes, was being used to lift the slabs into place to form the walls of the factory.

Emergency services did not attend the incident and it is believed there were no injuries. A spokesman for On Call Cranes declined to comment.
