Wife robs husband of Bt12 million

Published on May 16 , 2005

A Thai woman has been arrested for allegedly stealing a safe containing Bt12 million in cash from her husband, an English businessman.

At a press conference yesterday, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lt Gen Pansiri Prapawat said Suree Sriwipat, 38, was placed under arrest on Sunday.

A sports utility wagon worth Bt1.12 million and Bt10.9 million in cash in various currencies were impounded. The woman is suspected of having bought the car with some of her ill-gotten gains.

On May 7, Brandon Gered reported his safe stolen. He said the safe with its contents - Bt12 million in cash - disappeared from inside his apartment in Suan Luang district.

The subsequent investigation pointed to the man's Thai wife, Suree. She was soon arrested in Roi Et province and has been charged with theft, Pansiri said.

Suree said she stole the cash to get back at her husband who she claimed often scolded her when she asked him for money. Suree, who has been diagnosed with cervical cancer, said Gered had also often left her alone at home while he went on business.

After the arrest, Gered said he had was saddened by Suree's conduct but did not want to press charges.

However, because the alleged theft constitutes a criminal offence, police are bound by law to begin legal proceedings.

Now, don't cast suspicions.

This gentleman is probably a perfectly respectable English teacher with a highly developed savings technique, who undoubtedly will be able to account for every penny, plus produce the relevant documentation for all taxes paid.

Otherwise, why else would this money, in various currencies, not be in a bank account?

Since most of us live paycheck to paycheck, 12MB ($300K) certainly seems like a lot of money.

But for a successful businessman it can be petty cash. Just look at all the Benz's you see tooling around Bkk.

Now having that much money not in the bank account is a bit curious.

She looks like a really classy looking lady from the pics....Nice color coordination there.. :D

That must have been quite a big safe to hold 12 million Baht in cash. She was angry because her husband scolded her and left her alone to go on business, well after seeing her beautiful features and charming personality, I don't blame him....What was this guy thinking, setting up with this gnome, then keeping 12 million baht in his safe..... :o

Living in the same apt as the safe with 12 mill would have been too much for the issan lady ,surely he would have realised that ? it would have been gnawing at her brain day and night being so close to such a collosal sum of wedge .

A lot of westerners (but not all apparently) know that doing business here means doing business in cash (especially if you deal with conservative/old school locals). Large safe or unusually large sum? Hardly. 12,, Baht or around $300k USD barely weighs 7 pounds and takes up about as much space as a 500 page ream of A4 ink jet paper. More for old bills, less for new bills.

It could have just as easily been a safe that could have been carried by two people or even just one strong person. Next time, concrete + steel + a nice marble or granite finish, and your safe isn't going anywhere without some real effort.

:D

It seems he's just as frumpy-looking as she is... a perfect match made in Heaven.... :o

On appearances alone, he looks like he'd be lucky to have 1200 baht, let alone 12 million baht cash. :D

edit note: ok, ok... upon closer examination, looks like a decent bracelet he's got on... LOL :D
