Green Snake-two

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I posted in

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Green-Snake-t345160.html

This morning, after coffee, I decided to look at the thread again.

The additional comments caused me pause,

so I looked at

www.siam-info.de/english/snakes_crotalidae.html

and there they noted

A normal person cannot tell the difference between the green Pit Vipers.

The following Pit Vipers, present in Thailand, have a green colour:

* Cryptelytrops (Trimeresurus) albolabris (White-lipped Pit Viper)

* Viridovipera (Trimeresurus) gumprechti (Gumprecht's Pit Viper)

* Parias (Trimeresurus) hageni Hagen's Pit Viper

* Cryptelytrops (Trimeresurus) macrops (Large-eyed Pit Viper)

* Popeia (Trimeresurus) popeiorum popeiorum (Popes Pit Viper)

* Popeia (Trimeresurus) fucatus *in the works from MALHOTRA & THORPE (2004) not yet entered

* MALHOTRA & THORPE follows, entered here under the name Popeia

* Parias (Trimeresurus) sumatranus (Sumatra Pit Viper)

* Viridovipera (Trimeresurus) vogeli (Bird Pit Viper)

There is a serum against all green Pit Vipers available in Thailand.

Bites are very painful but do not usually end fatally. A bad bite can lead to necrosis.

Ok, It's 10:00 am, I step outside for a smoke...

and 4 meters away is a green tree viper.

So I go pick up the Steven pellet rifle the wife bought at xmas.

Gave it 2 pumps, loaded a 8.1 grain RWS Superdome...

set the scope to 5x, went back outside and nailed it in the head.

Pictures follow...

The Steven pellet rifle, 4.5mm (.177 cal):

Groups ok at 10 meters (need a better pellet:

4-shots:

8-shots:

Reasonably powerful, 3 pumps, 10 meters,

metal can (not aluminum):

And the snake:

Perhaps it is not a green tree viper, I don't care.

Snakes are not welcome here.

Three young children, 2 nannies, 1 maid, the missus and I.

I can recognize a python, they are somewhat safe.

The others are history.

Cheers

I wouldn't have shot the snake, I would have tried to catch it. They are mildly venomous, but are rear fanged, so you are unlikely to be in serious trouble with them. Like the others, I am also interested in the gun. All I have is an airsoft gun, which could kill a snake and puncture an aluminum can, but no way a normal food can.

Ok, Ok, OK. Jeeze I did not expect this.

Look, I will not post additional info concerning this,

for at least two~three weeks.

These are very "turbulent, unsettled" times here.

After awhile I will PM each whom request more info on the forum.

But not now.

If one is interested, just post on this thread.

As to "canuckamuck", thanks for the 'kudos".

This actually was a difficult difficult shot as,

the snake head was smaller than a 25 satong coin,

and the wind was blowing steadily.

I'm actually surprised I got it.

In the attached pic's, those are not my shots. .

They are from my 9 and 7 year old practicing shooting.

All the 'groups" and the "can" is theirs.

Mine are tighter groups.

But the boys are really good now,

The "stick" at 10 meters is less than a 5 baht coin.

They can hit it.

The "stick" at 20 meters is about a 5 baht coin.

They can hit it.

As can I.

Of course, bench-resting and no wind.

As to "Phil Conners" in Post # 4...

To answer your question, yes and no and maybe.

Technically NO, you can't even have a Red Ryder BB gun...

Welcome to the Grey World...

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Compressed-A...Sho-t78959.html

So yes you can buy or order one BUT,

do it in the Thai wife's/GF name,

and make sure you will never be seen with it...

do not take it to those registered forest areas,

or to shooting ranges.

But if they catch YOU with one...

Balance the two statements for what they are.

So do not (ever) use one of these on soi dogs.

Well one can use it on soi dogs but,

use flat tip wadcutters

( such as RWS Meisterkugeln at 8.2 grains,

and only one pump ).

Do not be mean and cruel. Just give them a sting.

Any dome pellet at two pumps, at 20 meters,

can/will embed itself into the muscle.

If you live in a condo, fine...

have a pellet backstop made, shoot at it, inside,

any pellet will suffice for 4~6 meters, at only 1~2 pumps.

Yeah, even cheap pellets and no scope.

Perhaps you did not notice our unit has a silencer?

On our unit, even at 4 pumps, it is very, very, very quite.

Did I say it was quite?

Now for those of you whom live outside the city,

on a farm, even a small one so to speak...

you have next to nothing to worry about.

Another (good) caveat is the police really don't care much for the

4.5mm (.177 cal) air rifle.

Still, farong, do not be seen with it.

My wife bought this to:

1 - for me to teach the boys how to shoot

2 - pest control, rats and snakes

It is serving its purpose.

But I really ensure no other Thai see's me with this.

GarryP, Yes I do agree, but

that infers one can tell the difference in the green snakes.

Which I cannot.

I've 3 young children, 2 nannies, a maid, I and the missus.

I prefer not to take chances.

Yeah an AirSoft could kill a snake ( I would not want to try it),

and perhaps

puncture an aluminum can (doubt both sides at 10 meters)

(actually doubt even one side at 10 meters).

Not to challenge you though, please.

Look, I have to go, The wife demands some attention.

Perhaps more tomorrow.

Cheers.

You killed a Ahaetulla prasina (Oriental Whip snakes)

Thai: ThaiSnakeName-36.gif (ngu kieo hua ching chok pa)

Length: Up to 190 cm

Occurrence: This subspecies is found throughout Thailand.

Habitat/behaviour:

By day these snakes inhabit the trees and shrubs of agricultural lands and forests. They lie in loose loops on the branches. By night, the snakes sleep in the same position in shrubs and trees, where they stay mostly on the outer branches. They feed on frogs, lizards, and birds. Rodents are generally not eaten by these snakes. In Thailand the ahaetulla prasina has 2 mating seasons per year. The main mating activities take place between the end of April and the beginning of July. However, mating can also take place between December and January.

Gestation lasts approximately 6 months. The females give birth to between 4 and 10 young animals, which are between 420 and 510 mm long at birth.

Danger:

Although this is considered to be a true colubrid (family) (fearfully poisonous teeth in the back jaw area) it is not dangerous to humans. The poison must be massaged into the bite wound by a chewing motion in order to be effective. Even with small lizards it takes the poison some 15 minutes to have an effect. When excited the snakes expand their neck area in order to appear larger. In this position it is possible then to see the banded region of the intermediate skin. In addition, the snake extends its tongue and holds it some seconds in this position. Besides the completely green snakes, they also appear as yellow or brownish, especially when young.

As to Air Rifles, I will tell you the plastic-BB rifles that you can buy in Thailand are powerful enough to shoot through a tin roof. They are battery operated and legal. I have an M-16 model that can me semi-automatic or fully automatic fire. I made the mistake of shooting a tokay on my friends tin roof and quickly put a few new holes in his roof for him. At 15 meters it is great for breaking up a dog fight. Which is better than when my wife used to shoot her 9mm glock in the air.

GarryP: I apologize for my comment yesterday.

For some reason my brain translated Airsoft for Paintgun.

gosompoi: was that roof tin or aluminum, and did you get the tokay?

BTY thanks for post that info about the snake from siam-info.de.

I had already researched and found it.

Do please always "source" those type of posts. Give him credit.

I admit to knowing nothing about Airsoft units.

Phil Conners: yeah, we are still talking about air rifles.

except that mech creature that gosompoi mentioned.

OK, the wife did speak to our "source",

and received (verbal) permission to mention his info.

Next I need to PM a global mod for answers to a few questions.

Such as open a new thread, what forum, and their suggestions for what to say.

Pleeze give me a bit of time here...

I'm sick with a nasty upper-res infection,

all 3 children are home from school for the school break,

and several issues concerning the home, work and school,

and I need to craft a review concerning this unit...

which includes some tips and tricks.

Cheers

dam_n, another snake, a cobra.

post-39337-1268132448_thumb.jpg

Yeah, at 17:15 the 7 year old wanted to play in the front yard...

I said no, almost time to eat and the sun is going down.

At 17:30 the maid in the front yell's moo how,

sure enough a cobra.

Again dispatched it with the pellet rifle.

I wondered what I had said. Just one of those days. I don't think the mods will allow you to post on sources of goods that may be considered illegal if bought by foreigners.

You seem to have made sure of killing it. I think with my airsoft gun I would have needed about twenty shots do sort him out if not shot point blank. And who wants to get point blank with a cobra, apart from the intrepid Mr. Ian Forbes.

Garry, please, I spurted Chang out my nose and coughed till I thought dying.

Yeah, Ian would likely take on a Cobra with bare hands.

Bless his heart!

And yeah, I also do not think the mods will allow it..

at least nobody in 'forum support" has answered my post since 15:15.

That's a good indication already,

thanks for the laff, I needed it, even if it hurt.

Why has this thread in the 'Plants, Pets and Vets' forum turned into 'The Best Way of Getting a Gun and Killing Snakes' forum?

It appears that the OP killed a snake that is harmless to people. Or am I missing something here?

All a bit Macho but a good excuse to kill something harmless to humans, and then brag about marksmanship.

It's so sad to see how many people there are out there who really like hurting other creatures.

Who's talking about rats? Snakes, particularly cobras will eat rats.

A harmless Whip snake was killed simply because the poster was unable or (couldn't be bothered) to know what is, or isn't, venomous.

Anyway, a jolly good excuse to go out and kill something.

I think far better to educate kids (and adults) to understand and know what could be a threat rather than demonstrate Daddy's prowess with an airgun.
