Southern rail services still paralysed

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: -- Thailand's southern train services remained paralysed on Thursday as rail workers continue to salvage the derailed carriages.

A cargo train heading to Padang Besar from Chumphon jumped the tracks in the Ronpibul district on Wednesday. Officials are still investigating the cause of the accident, although they suspect it was the result the heavy rain in the area.

The accident has forced the railway authorities to suspend all but two trains heading south, from Bangkok to Trang province.

Rescue work continued throughout the night. But it was severely hampered by the rain. The heavy train wagons had slide into a steep ravine. Four of the ten carriages have salvaged.

South-bound rail services have been suspended until further notice. Rail officials told TNA that they were unable to estimate when the rescue work would be completed.

I was caught in the same situation a few years back, because of heavy rain and flood, the passenger train service had to stop at Trang. Luckily no mishaps on that day.
