Thai Electronics Shops?

Hello all

Does anyone know if there is an electronics store chain like Dick Smiths in Aust, think similar is Radio Shack in USA, in BKK?

I want to buy one of those 150 in 1 electronics kits for kids with Thai manual. If you don't know of any chain stores, any idea where I might find one in BKK?

NPE in Ban Mo is a good bet, there's another branch in Zeer Rangsit, maps etc here http://www.mynpe.com/

They definitely do kits requiring soldering but I've not seen those clip together "make 100 different projects" thingys, can't hurt to have a look anyway.

Provided the youngster is of reasonable age (I would say 10 or so), learning to solder properly is a valuable skill. I certainly never had a clip together jobbie.

There is an educational supply chain of shops in BKK. Sorry I don't know the name. The one I know is next to Ekamai Bus depot. The largest store is near national stadium. They have lots of school project stuff. I haven't seen the 150-in-1 type of kit.

There is a small electronics shop on Sukhumvit 71 near Soi 15 that has individual kits for odd things like a Christmas tree with flashing lights but they are one time use.

Thanks for that. Will take a look at suggested options. Couldn't agree more about learning to solder but had in mind the clip together thingys for starters.

The lad is 11 and, like me as a kid, loves pulling the back off gadgets to see what's inside. Someone gave me a kit when I was about the same age and 30 odd years later its still the best gift I remember.

Have had half a hunt around Panthip when last in BKK but couldn't see anything there. Always happy to wander around gadget dens.

Toys R Us and Central department stores kid's sections have those electronic beginner/trainer sets.

There is a chain called Amorn found in many malls where computers and phone are sold. I've not seen larger kits that you mention but they do mini kits , make a flashing light, radio, etc. Might be more helpful to start with a small defined project that has a easy to understand finishing point rather than an open ended mass of bits that can intinidate a beginner - start small then he/she will gather the world's supply of bits for future projects.

Amorn has a range of easy-to-solder kits with Thai manuals, called I-Style (Einstein), nice pun on Thai pronunciation.

They also have theme packs with an experiment breadboard (you push in the wires and parts / IC's), I have seen

- Digital I/Cs

- Communication

- PIC Microcontrollers

Though it may be a year or two for him before he really can enjoy these.

Ban Mo is the place to be for every part you can possibly think of and more. If you have easy schematics, get a nice breadboard and a few handfulls of parts (E20 resistor series, ceramic caps, assortment of electrolyte caps, handful of NPN transistors, basic ICs (555 / 741 / basic logic parts 74xx00 / 04 etc) LOTS of LEDs, microswitches...

the whole list should set you back anywhere between 1,000 and 2,000 Baht tops, and you have plenty to play with for years to come.
