What To Do In Cm

Misplaced

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Hope you good CM TV folks can give some suggestions.

My wife and I will be going to U.S. Embassy in CM on April 9th and decided to stay additional day to sight see. We've been to CM before but never overnight, so if you a CM experts, we would appreciate your suggestions. We would like your suggestion from where to stay, where/what to eat, what to see...etc....Anything you can think for us to do in CM for 2 days would be great. We have a lot of energy so don't be shy :)

Hotels - not to far from Train station or U.S. Embassy

food - we want to try good spicy Northern CM food

Sight seeing - anything but DOIs and WATTS....Night Bazaar perhaps?

We would appreciate any suggestions and thank you in advance

The US does not have an embassy in Chiang Mai. The US does have a consulate. :D

Yep... I was gonna say that too but Got beat me to it! :D.

BTW Did you make your appointment online with the Consulate yet? They are only "open" Tuesday and Thursdays all day. But the hours left I normally see are mornings. Which totally sucks for me... since I have class. Its so lame. I cant even get extra passport pages because I refuse to miss class. lol

And I agree with britmaveric. Go to Doi Suthep. Yes, theres a Wat, on a Doi... But its beautiful. If youre not lazy or in horrible cardio state... walk up the stairs. Its said if you make it to the top, a wish will come true. But if youre lazy like me, cram like sardines into the elevator/escalator and up you go.

Also you might be able to go see the winter palace. Not the resident section but the gardens and such. I'm not sure if it is open yet though. Some people told me it was but no one I know has confirmed it.

Doi Inthanon I like. But I hear the fee for farang is expensive? I blend, plus I carry university ID so I get discount apon the Thai price. lol The chedi at the top are pretty. I still want to picnic up there. :) Also plenty of waterfalls along the way up. I prefer to chill at them.

Chiangmai zoo is fun... I need to go still. I only went to the aquarium.

There is some Archeological sites to the southeast of Chiang mai. Its where the old kingdom/capital was before Chiang mai was built.

I personally think the Night Bazaar is over rated. I like the Sunday walking street on Rachadumnerm Rd better. There is also a Thursday walking street on Wualai Rd. I havent been to it, but my classmate loves it.

Hmm dont know if there's anything else. Elephant camps?

err forgot hotel...

Immeco Chiangmai is close to both US consulate and Train station. you could walk to either place from places. Its cheap too for a shared room (but since theres 2 people it'll just be you two) and a shared bath - dorm style.

Wait... whats youre actual stay date? 8 - 10? Immeco on the 10th is full checkout only day I believe. Since the following week they are closed

Also, do you a special appointment at the consulate for the April 9th. Since it is a Friday. and On their website it states Tuesday and Thursday are the day to do any papers and such.

Wualai Market is on Saturday night (not Thursday)..also for next 4 weeks on a Saturday night there is the OTOP Market which is held in Thapae Road (road cordoned off at Kampandin Rd to the gate) and around the Thapae Gate area..food and entertainment..not too many people go there and easy to walk down Thapae Road..which was the original Walking Street Market venue.

Hard to suggest stuff to people you don't know, but the following are some things you could do, if any of them sound interesting you can get more info on them:

- The town and surrounding areas are full of spas. Almost any kind of spa treatment is available, ask if you want specifics.

- Museums - there is a hill tribe museum located in a park north of town, it's worth a visit... there is also an art museum/gallery run by Chiang Mai university if you want to check out some art exhibitions... a private 'insect museum' which is a private collection of bugs run by an eccentric guy. Again, a bit overpriced but if you're not worried so much about money and are interested in bugs then why not?

- Zoo - there is a large one at the foot of Doi Suthep, I think they overcharge a bit and the conditions for the animals aren't optimal, but not the worst I've seen either

- River cruise with dinner (a few different ones available I believe, the Riverside one looks nice when it floats by, but I've never tried it personally)

- Dinner on a rooftop - on top of Porn Ping Hotel there is a roof terrace with a great view of the city. They have a BBQ menu on - which is not great in itself (passable though) but it's the view that is good, especially amplified by a few cocktails and/or beers - if you do go make sure you go before it's dark as it's a nice spot for sunset

- Caves - there are nice caves in the Sankamphaeng Area if that's your thing, also if you want a serious workout you can head out to Mae On and climb the staircase to the Mueang On Cave - not recommended unless you're in decent physical shape, it's a seriously steep mountain and the staircase is looooooong

- Rent a car and drive around the back of Doi Suthep "the Samoeng loop", really pretty mountain road with lots of restaurants and resorts along the way for whenever you get hungry or thirsty, and on the Mae Rim side of the loop there is an elephant camp, a few 'animal shows' and a place where you can go and pet large felines (tigers and lions) if that is something you desire (I don't trust predators myself, and somebody got hurt there last year) as well as ATV rental and bungy jump

... just a few ideas.

I didn't know appointment is req'd. Every time I called there, nobody ever answer the phone. I thought I could just walk in since can't get them to answer phone or email. Any suggestions? I was planning on walking in on Friday April 9th

No there is no Thai name. Its Immeco Chiangmai on Bamrungrad (bam - rung -rad) RD across/near the British Consulate. DO NOT get it confused with Immeco Thapae. They have an actual hotel at Thapae Gate. That is not the one you want.

I do suggest taking a mosquito electric swatter with you & mosquito repellent body spray. The property has alot of plants and as beautiful as it is... there a bunch of mosquito that comes with it. lol Also ask for extra towels so you can block the bottom of the door too. For the price, service, and quality of rooms, its well worth it having to take some precautions for yourself.

The one on Bamrungrad is Hotel/hostel. But very posh for a hostel. I have some pictures if you want to see. The shared room/shared baths is 300B each if under 2 nights.

You'll have to call them to make sure if room/ time works. Because on the 10th everyone must check out by 12pm, from what it looks like on the site. So I believe they are closing for the week of Songkran.

I dont have pictures of the Private rooms that have a private bath. They are a bit more like 900B a nite. I have looked in when walking by those rooms. They do look nice. lol

They only do non emergency service on Tuesdays and Thursdays. So you'll have to go on April 8. They have a couple hours open in the morning for that day. 4 appointments still open from 8:30 - 9:30am.

Yeah, they never answer phones. They do answer emails though.

You'll also need to go early by 30 mins to get though security. Do not take this items with you: camera, water bottles or anything with liquid in them, no chapsticks, lipsticks. Food and so on. They go through everything. So the less you have on you the better.

Pretty much just take money, passports, and your papers.

Yunni & everyone,

Thanks for everything. I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciated. This is exactly why I post on this site. This trip to CM is personally important to my wife and I and you all have helped us tremendously. Thanks again :)
