Anyone know a good place to by Koi (Carps - fish) for the garden pond in or near Pattaya?

How much do they cost @ 20-30 cm length?

Dont know if they have the size you are looking for, but there is a place called Pattaya Aquarium on Chaiyapruek 2 more or less opposite Collinbourne Auctions, about 300m over the railway tracks.

Another one on Toonglom Taanman (Suk 89) about 2-300m over the rail tracks again, on the left, they look like a pet food shop and have a lot of orchids out the front, they had big ones last time i was in.

Couldn't tell you costs, all down to your negotiating skills!!

My wife buys them at a shop 200 mtrs after the CAT office on Pattaya Tai (going toward Sukhumvit) she says it has dog cages out front of it. cost her B120 for about 20cm fish.

Other place we buy them is at the weekend market opposite Honda on Sukhumvit.

On Saturday and Sunday, there is a plant market on Sukumvit across from the Honda dealer (noth of MiniSiam) where 3 or 4 vendors have Koi, fish food and pond supplies. Their prices are much better than any of the shops and their selection is generally better. Price depends a lot on "grade". A nice 30 cm Koi will probably be B250 to B500. I bought a nice 18 cm Koi from the lady with a shop in the back on Saturday for B130. Her prices ranged from B130 to 280 for Koi that size. In Bangkok, a comparible fish would be about half that price, as are the supplies.

Changing the topic slightly but still to do with ponds, I recently had a pond built but he put in what appears to be an all purpose industrial water pump with no adequate filter. Is there anywhere that specialises in ponds and equipment where I can buy something more suitable? Thanks.

most of the aquatic shops have filters the blue bucket type i connected three of these in series works perfect and my pond is about 6000 gallon in regards to the koi yep the markets the place to go 1 guy on there in particular deals in the larger koi i bought 25 off him came to 12,000 baht all 30 to 40 cm six months ago and all are doing fine

Pond filters are a bit tricky, especially if you want something functional and also asthetic. You also are likely to need aeration, such as a fountain or water fall. The owner of the shop on Pattaya Nua, on the north side very close (50 m) to the intersection with Sukumvit can be very helpful. He has a lot of ideas and suggestions and some pictures, but he does not do the work. You will need to find someone for that. The best filters are in ground at (not above) water level, and have multiple filter elements -- brushes, heavy fiber, and then material (such as oyster shells) to house the necessary bacteria. Unless you ant a lot of hoses and cords running over the top of and into your pond, you need to design the filter (and the pipes running into and out of it) along with the pond.

^And the key to filters is - leave them alone!!! my missus thought she was doing good cleaning it out every week!!!!!! just give it time.

correct on that takes time only clean mine out if it gets blocked up

If a filter is constructed properly (with several chambers) the first chamber with the brushes should be cleaned once every week or two, but the bacteria houses should be left alone -- once a year cleaning is recommended.

Be sure you talk to the owner of the P Nua shop. The people that work there are not knowledgeable.

Buy very nice tiny koi carp, just pick nice colors, and dont forget they have lots of babys, about 50 baht belive me they grow very fast in the Tropics, had koi carp in the UK for 20 years no babies to cold

Pond filters can be a bit of a nigtmare, but the best methed I think is simple + works on the bottom of your pond make a grid of 2 inch plastic pipes with lots of holes every 2 inch or so the size about 1 /8th conect to your pump, then cocer the pipes with about 1 foot of shingle, it will not have to be cleaned for years, but if you do not put your pond in the shade it will be green, this will work shade is the main thing good luck

If your post was intended to be even remotely understandabe, it isn't. If I tried to construct what you suggest, I'd have the nightmare that you say pond filters can be (here a certainty!).
