Mystery of attacks deepens despite truce talks

BANGKOK: -- Remember Sharon Stone's character in "Basic Instinct"? She wrote a novel that seemed to accurately predict deaths in real life.

When questioned by police as a potential suspect, she replied that it would have been very stupid of her to carry out all the murders as depicted in her own book.

Or she could have used the book as a false alibi, the police countered. She may have really killed the victims but used the novel to lure everyone into thinking "she wouldn't have been so stupid to do that".

When it comes to bombs and drive-by shootings during this politically volatile period, the situation is somewhat similar.

The targets have been linked with Thaksin Shinawatra's criticism of what he described as Thailand's flawed structure - the Bangkok Bank, the National Counter Corruption Commission, TV stations and so on.

If the red shirts - albeit the hardcore individuals in the fractious movement - were responsible, why were they so stupid to go after organisations panned in his speeches one by one?

It could also be "the other side" wanting to frame the red shirts. And it could also be the red shirts wanting to look like they are being framed.

Yet it could be a third party wanting to undermine the government; or it could be a third party wanting to undermine thae red shirts. Last but not least, it could be all of the above.

It began on February 27, one day after the assets-seizure verdict had been handed down. An M-76 grenade was launched at a Bangkok Bank branch on Rama II but did not explode. Then more attacks followed and have averaged two or three incidents a day over the past few days.

There were frequent grenade attacks or shooting when the yellow shirts took to the streets. One difference, though, was most incidents injured People's Alliance for Democracy protesters or happened very close to them.

This time, attacks have been aimed at places that were symbolic enemies of Thaksin, the reds' patriarch.

'HARD TO PINPOINT ANYONE'

"It's very hard to pinpoint anyone, because the apparently systematic campaign could possibly be the work of separate groups," said one military analyst.

"And looking at the significance of each attack may not be enough."

For example, many bomb attacks did help the reds because the incidents reinforced an impression that the government was losing control.

Yet certain incidents, such as the grenade fired into the 11th Infantry Regiment headquarters on Saturday night, gave the government justification to threaten to impose martial law inside the compound ahead of a planned red-shirt gathering there.

And the attacks near Banharn Silapa-archa's house could be interpreted in two ways. Was he being warned against defecting from the Abhisit coalition? Or was he being "told" to quickly withdraw support for the government?

Other questions include what security forces had been doing. With all the extra patrols, checkpoints and tightened security at specific places, one might think attackers are roaming Bangkok at will.

Other observers also say that even if attackers are arrested, the big fish might not be caught.

"Orders or assignments must have been passed on through several links and ended up with someone who might have wanted to do it for just a small sum of money without knowing who he was doing it for," a police source said.

The most violent day coincided with the red shirts' most successful psychological mission.

The attacks at Channel 5 and Channel 11 on Saturday evening left 10 people injured and threatened to steal the headlines from protesters' ability to peacefully flush troops out of many strategic spots near their rally site earlier in the day.

After a grenade was fired into the 11th Regiment headquarters later on Saturday night, coinciding with the red shirts' threat to storm the compound the next morning, the government responded with a threat to impose martial law there.

Tension eased when both sides agreed to negotiate.

But despite the talks, attacks have continued. "The message, therefore, seems to be that keep on negotiating if you like, but this is not going to end," a government source said.

Hopefully they will soon catch whomever is responsible and hopefully they are not affiliated to any of the current protagonists.

association - they know someone who went somewhere and met someone else that has something to do with something that means they are were sent by that side,

clothing - they might be wearing a white shirt when they are caught, which links them directly to the peace movement,

looks - they had a shaved head, so they must be a red supporter that got his head shaved recently, or they look pale, so they must be a red supporter who gave blood recently

ignorance - they must be associated with that group, because why would the other group do that

Grenade hits charity of Thai king's aide: police

BANGKOK (AFP) -- A hand grenade was thrown in Bangkok Tuesday night at a charity set up by the king's top aide, police said, as anti-government protests continue in the capital.

Two men on a motorcycle tossed the M67 grenade at the General Prem Tinsulanonda Foundation, causing damage to the outside walls but wounding nobody, police said.

General Prem, 89, is head of the king's privy council and a former prime minister whom the anti-government "Red Shirts" believe was the mastermind behind the coup that deposed their icon, Thaksin Shinawatra, in 2006.

The Red Shirts have been rallying in Bangkok since mid-March in a bid to force the government to call snap elections, in what they say is a campaign against Thailand's elite, including military officials and royal advisers.

While the demonstrations have been largely peaceful so far, a series of small explosions have hit politically significant sites and army buildings, injuring more than a dozen people in the last four days.

When all is said and done, I believe that we will find that the violence is the product of multiple sources;

1. Elements within the military

2. Misguided redshirts

Mazeltov --- please tell that to the people that died from grenade attacks that commenced immediately after Sae Daeng annonced them. Please tell that to the familes of the wounded after he made his most recent announcements.

Then again for someone that claims to know things about the current impasse your questions of who is Sae Daeng and is he violent were just typical disengenuiness.
