Happens at the end of each month (from what I've noticed, it's just before police pay day :o )

Upshot is normally up to 100B a time.... Although if you take your time to find licence, no money, can't speak Thai etc.... then they sometimes give up and go on to someone quicker...

A friend of mine fresh into Surin said to his wife as she was leaving on a motorcycle, "Make sure you put your helmet on".

She said, "It doesn't matter, it's after lunch".

"What difference does that make?", he said.

"Well the 'helmet police' are only on duty in the morning!", she said.

"That is not the reason for wearing your helmet", he said. "It's to protect your head in case of an accident".

She said, "There are no accidents in Surin!".

There used to be a link with Payday, but now it's very often and at any time , especially the Police box in Chaweng Village, and Nathon on the seafront. The real fine is 500 Baht so if you're not paying that and signing the book at the Police box you know it's "un - official". But don't be a prat, wear one!

If you value your life, you should wear a helmet. It's common sense. You should also drive on the left side of the white line...if you want to have an accident free stay in Samui. When pulling out to avoid a parked car, use your mirror and your indicator, and try to keep a regular speed of about 60 kms/p.h. and be AWARE 100% of the time.

I see tourists with no t shirts, no jeans, no helmet tearing down the middle of the road taking all the chances they can...it's unbelievable!

Most of them have never ridden a bike before, none have a license, coz if they do they get a real bike, and none know the Thai traffic laws and style.

The worst ones of all are the ones with kids who take two bikes, mum and kid on one, dad and kid on the other and no helmets....For Christs sake why don't they get a frickin Jeep the cheap a sholes! Imagine going home and explaining to their family why the wife and kids are dead and they ask you if you were all wearing a helmet? You couldn't live with yourself!

They just don't get how bloody dangerous Samui driving is...most locals have bought their licenses or still don't have one, and all thai drivers have no road disciplin or driving education as we know it...not to mention the break system on a Honda Dream etc...

OK, finished now, feel alot better....

Emulating the locals, no doubt.

I have never been able to determine the Thai mentality to driving.

Not knowing the 'give way' rules at a roundabout could be considered ignorance.

Driving on the wrong side of the road could be considered lazyness.

Driving a motorbike without a helmet could be considered crazy.

But running a red light could only be considered downright stupidity!

That's if you can find a red light that actually works on Samui ...

Sometimes the one at Bophut works OK, but I have never seen the one a few hundred metres from Lotus in the Chaweng direction work.

Well, he traffic lights work regularly!

And about helmet: in Phuket there's a lok-like-agreement between police and motorbike-taxis: Police stops drivers without helmet, treats them to take the motarbike-taxi to the police-station have them paying THB500, passing by a shop to buy a helmet and return. Charge for taxi almost double fare, helmet... THB 1000!

For this and other reasons: better wear one. (have been lazy too last time because of all the water running out my body...
