Hi all

Just bought a new motorbike from the Honda dealership and they say they want a letter from immigration. Firstly not really sure why but secondly what do I need to give immigration to get the letter. They mentioned a proof of residence letter from my apartment which I did for something else before, but this all seems a bit strange. I do have a work permit etc but just weird why...

In order to buy a bike or car in Thailand you must go to immigration with a letter from your landlord with his Thai ID and signed stating where you live. Immigration will for 500 baht give you a certificate of residency (CR) or you can go to your embassy/consulate and swear out an affidavit for 1200 to 2000 baht After you have the CR you can buy the vehicle. You will also need a separate CR for a Thai driving license. Same process same cost.

The work permit serves as proof of address in place of the address verification letter from the embassy or the residency certificate from immigration. Suspect the dealership may not be aware of this but you should bring it to their attention. My cars & bike all bought with only the WP to prove my address.

//edit - Also the WP works in place of the letter for getting your Thai DL.

ahhh as I only have a photocopy of the three main pages normally needed for my wp will that be ok? Or do they need the original...?

If not what other documentation do I need besides the proof of residence letter from my landlord. I have a feeling the boss isnt gonna do a copy of his ID, is a signature from a member of staff here ok...? Im sure thats what I had last time In any case I can borrow my original w.p.

Just signed copies!

WP both contains your home address and your work address, so is accepted as proof of residence.
