The dozens of women _ young, middle-aged and old _ who serve as human shields protecting the nine key leaders of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) show no fear in carrying out their risky mission. One of the PAD's female guards, Tong, 34, who runs her own business, said she was not afraid of confronting anti-riot police, as she believed the officers would not dare to attack women.

''If I have no other choice, I will squeeze their private parts until their faces turn green,'' she said.

Mrs Tong and 10 of her family members have been involved with the PAD rally since it began in May.

She has been assigned to guard gate 4 of Government House, opposite the Office of the National Counter Corruption Commission.

The gate is located near barriers set up by police armed with anti-riot gear.

She said she never gave a thought to the danger when she volunteered to be a human shield for the PAD leaders, who she said deserved protection.

''[The PAD leaders] expose facts about the wrongs carried out by corrupt politicians,'' she said.

Rak, 26, a bachelor's degree holder, said she volunteered as a guard for the PAD as many of the demonstrators were elderly or middle-aged people.

She has learned how to protect herself and others if anti-riot police moved to disperse the protest by using tear gas or pepper spray.

''I honestly believe that the police will not act violently against women,'' Rak said.

Maew, 21, a native of Trat, said she accompanied her father, who wanted to join the PAD.

She decided to be a PAD guard to protect her father and other demonstrators. She said she feared nothing.

Human shields are the PAD's main strategy for dealing with police. Those who serve as human shields are mostly women who volunteer for the front-line positions to protect their leaders. Each human shield comprises 300 to 400 women.

Those serving as human shields said they would firmly join hands to form a chain if police attempted to break up the protest.

I only fly about once every few years, so I do not care if PAD shut the airports of not.

1. Drop a dozen of their best snipers on the roof top of surrounding building via helicopters.

2. Aim and shoot both legs of all the RED leaders (not to kill them, just wound them).

3. Airlift the snipers out.

4. Repeat from step one to three, everyday, at 8am & 6pm when evryone (including the RED) will have to stand up for the national anthem.

Since the legs of the RED leaders are injured, they have to go hospital, nearest of which is the police hospital. The police can then arrest them there will they were receiving treatment.

BANGKOK: -- PAD re-emerges to give government an ultimatum; security forces will never allow a repeat of use of force against anti-riot troops, Army spokesman says

The Army yesterday gave the red shirts a stern warning against staging a rally on the prohibited Silom Road - as the crisis grew more complicated with the People's Alliance for Democracy re-emerging to give an ultimatum to the government.

Security forces would never allow a repeat of use of force against riot troops, Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd said yesterday, suggesting tough measures will be used to stop the protests spreading from Rajprasong intersection to Silom Road.

However, Sansern said troops will only disperse the red shirts when the timing is right.

"If I say when, the operation is doomed to fail," he said.

The rally by the red shirts, due to held on Tuesday, was just a gimmick to use crowds as shields to safeguard leaders facing arrest, he said.

Numbers at Rajprasong quite a lot, he said. The crowd surged to around 13,000 on Saturday night and dropped to about 4,000 yesterday morning.

The anti-riot force would not allow the reds to parade around the capital or set up a new site at Silom, he said, vowing to contain the rally where it is.

He said a number of special operations teams were dispatched to stakeout high-rise buildings around the rally site in order to prevent any infiltration by armed terrorists.

Crowd control measures would be stepped up and protesters discouraged from entering Rajprasong. Police will issue citations for those who refuse to heed warnings at the barricaded zone.

"Whatever happens, there will be no repeat of assaults against the riot forces, seizures of official vehicles and arms," the Army spokesman said.

He said the riot forces were under strict instruction to exercise restraint but would have the right to repel life-threatening attacks. He also ruled out concern over the enforcement of martial law.

Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan said the government had veered off course by trying to fault the red shirts for harbouring terrorists in their midst.

Jatuporn demanded the red shirts have equal access at stakeout points set up by the riot forces. In the April 10 violence, a lot of people were shot dead by gunfire from buildings, he claimed.

Red-shirt leaders insist Silom protest will go ahead

Red-shirted leaders still insisted on a protest on Silom but were vague on how it would take place, only urging red shirts in rural areas to travel to the capital and take part in the upcoming mass rally.

Metropolitan Police Region 1 commander Maj-General Wichai Sangprapai said he was negotiating with the red shirts - to try to limit the rally near Siam Discovery to Pathumwan intersection, and to shift loudspeakers away from Chulalong-korn Hospital.

Police have beefed up security at Bangkok Bank headquarters after the red shirts threatened to rally on Silom Road.

Businessmen for Democracy Club secretary-general Pornsak Limboonyaprasert said any protests on Silom would inflict untold damage on the business community.

The PAD, meanwhile, gave the government seven days to resolve the crisis with the red shirts or the movement would organise counter rallies which could have unknown consequences.

All core leaders of the PAD, except Sondhi Limthongkul, and about 3,000 ranking members turned out at Rangsit University auditorium to "brainstorm" a way out of the political predicament.

It was the first gathering of the yellow shirts from across the country since the red shirts began their Bangkok rally on March 12.

"The red shirts have caused polarisation with words like 'prai' and 'ammat' but their real intention is to mobilise the masses as a means to transform the political system," Chamlong Srimuang said.

The violence on "Black Saturday" would not have erupted with so many soldiers killed if the government had taken effective legal action against the red shirts, he said.

Somsak Kosaisuk said any drastic reform of the government system should come via Parliament.

"I believe Thais don't want chaos," he said, referring to the violence-prone street protests by the red shirts.

Pipop Thongchai blamed fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Pheu Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh for the April 10 violence.

Hardcore leftists and certain remnants of the nowdefunct Communist Party of Thailand had teamed up with the red shirts to try to trigger a civil war, he said.

The PAD issued a statement condemning Thaksin and his army of red shirts for trying to incite a rebellion.

Pheu Thai Party, the red shirts and a private army were seeking to agitate the public, leading to an uprising, it said in the statement.

A group of well armed men, a few hundred up to a thousand surrounded by 100,000 people, can wreck an invading group hel_l bent on m,oving the reds.

You saw 250 Thai military shot with mainly rubber bullets last time.

If a large group were to attempt to push the reds out, the red snipers armed with machine guns and automatic rifles, would fill the streets with dead Army.

Some of you, in fact most of you, are unaware of the realities of an urban battle.

The men in black can move about easily all over Bangkok because nobody knows who they are. If you attack the maul area attempting to move them and capture them, they will drop huge numbers of the Thai army down dead. Then, if they do decide to leave, they simply will fade back into the city and start again in another location.

By huge, I mean think about it.

A few hundred special force snipers on the red side can certainly kill a few thousand Thai army should the Thai army group go close. Most of the men in black were not even used the last time and they shot 250 in a short time. The bigger the group to shoot at, and the more they will shoot.

Actually people have taken their children or borrowed other peoples children to take to this demonstration, perhaps they thought the whole affair would be an easy pushover, but its not and it will get nasty over the next week, those kids should be sent home asap. but I guess they wont, as the red leaders will tell them lies again. The only saving grace is that the type of commandos they are bringing in will be crack marksmen, but what about the mental health of those kids when they are exposed to blood and guts of their guardians splattered everywhere?

If this happens I fear the Red -Shirts may disperse temporarily only to regroup and then begin an all out armed insurgency. Many could die and the country be plunged into Iraq-like chaos. Why not just bring back the 1997 Constitution, hold a free and fair election and respect the outcome of that election? Why do red supporters keep coming out with "Abhisit wasn't elected"?

this article gets to the root of the problem in trying to remove these protesters

the authorities have allowed then to get comfortable, they are well fed and watered

they have bathing facilities, toilets and entertainment.

if it came to a fight they are well rested and ready for it

the authorities should effect some measures to change that situation before making any efforts to move them

a little sleep deprevation would go a long way towards success

so lets bring in some huge mobile disco units, surround the site with them safe behind army/police lines and serande them with some very sad Thai songs that refer to dead relatives, lost loves, long dead favourite buffaloes, loss of sons, daughters, motorbikes etc

lets set the tone for a massive loss, lets get people thinking about a loss/death of a relative.

also to the bottled water being supplied to them

tell them if they feel sleepy they should report to the medical tent immediately

tell them they should not go to sleep and that it could be dangerous to go to sleep

tell them its the same kind of drug that katoeys use on clients in Pattaya, they will know of many that have died whilst being robbed.

at night when things do settle down, the army should safely detonate huge exposive charges in the immediate area

if not explosives then launch huge fireworks every 20 minutes

one could get unidentified bodies from the morgue, dress them in red shirts and leave them in areas near to the rally

they should be in a position where they can easily be found

it should be rumoured that there are reds in the crowd that are with the army and government and that they are picking off the protestors one by one

they should be told to look at your neighbour with suspicion and care

I've read. I've posted. I've explained. All I get back is "he wasn't elected".

And then half-truths:

- "the red government (which was elected) " - The PPP got 40% of the vote and needed coalition partners to form government.

- "the red government was banned" - the PTP (ex-PPP) were still in government after the PPP was disbanded.

- "MPs jumped ship" - MPs changing sides - it's legal, it's democratic, it happens in many countries that have coalition governments.
