Women And Tv Sports

Featured Replies

A recent conversation with La Miggie about the loss of her favorite football team got me to thinking. I grew up in a house full of non-sports oriented women. I mean, we particpated in sports, my oldest sister dreamt of competitive swimming and dreams of the Olympics when she was young were dashed when a chlorine allergy sidelined that and my middle sister liked running, still does in fact, and has taken Krav Maga. Both love to ski and board. (Me, I am a couch potato :)) But, none of us were much into watching sports on tv. We grew up with a father who had no interest in team sports on tv either. Rather, he spent his weekends home with us kids. Making giant kites to fly over the valley, picking strawberries, going to the mountains, etc.

So, I must admit then, I don't really understand the appeal.

I know MIggie loves her Arsenal, and F1, well obviously she loves formula one. So, I am curious, you women who watch sports on tv, what piqued your interest and your love and devotion (in the case of miggie and f1)? Was it a man in your life or did it just some how attract you?

awwww a thread dedicated almost solely to me :D

:)

but to get the thread going.....here is how it all started for me

yes certainly was a man in my life...although he was only a boy at the time

when we were kids, my brother and I werent always allowed out of the house (safety issues), and whenever couldnt go out he would play football in the small corridor in the house.....and given I was the only other person around, I was always made de facto goal keeper :)

this was when we were around 4 to 8 years old

from there on, football has always been a part of my life. but Im like SBK in that Ive never been a sporty active type...so to continue my love and interest in the game meant I became a spectator. back in those days, live games on TV were far from common and internet was non existent (am I revealing my age here? HAHA). so we got our news from: newspapers, dedicated weekly football papers, and bits and pieces of big world events such as the World Cup

(we also read lots of football cartoons :D )

now as to F1, you may have me confused with someone else? I pay attention every now and then, for instance when some friend talk about it in the office, or a friend I used to catch up with on frequent trips to KL - he was a bit hooked, so often we'd be doing drinks in a bar that shows it live, or another time cos my brother decided to go to the event in KL. (funnily....in recent year, F1 has featured in another way in my life - dated a guy who has F1something as part of his email address :D )

Sorry, meant F1Fanatic. Clearly a Formula One fan :)

I once dated a woman who loved to watch American Football with me. When I asked her why she was so into football, she told me as the youngest of three children, two older brothers & a Dad who all loved football, that this is what they did on Sundays. She really enjoyed the game and knew it well, so it was a lot of fun to watch games with her. The only problem was that she was a NY Giants fan while I support the Chicago Bears, after watching one of those games together we decided that if they ever played each other again, she would go to her parents house and watch it there while I would go to a sports bar on my own!

I occasionally watch footie with the Thaivisa guys in Bangkok.....but I refuse to watch an Arsenal game with them :)

(they talk too much!!! I just wanna watch my game in peace...even if my peace involves the constant almost heart attacks :D )

Aww Miggy, that's not really quite true that we talk too much!! As for watching Arsenal on TV, what was the score at the weekend? I stopped watching when they were 2-0 up. :D

And mrtoad makes a rare appearance in the ladies forum to stalk miggie and harass her about her football team :)

Seriously tho, does your brother watch football too miggie?

he sure does

we often give each other wake up calls across towns, countries and every now and then even across continents :)

especially when there is a big game we both need to watch

then we'd call each other at half time to discuss.......and depending on result at end of game...we may call straight away, or if we are disappointed then go to bed licking our wounds

HAHA

and yes....I did say I have a stalker :D

AND he is right

they dont all talk too much

the biggest culprit is that green toad! (I remember watching an Arsenal game with him once........he dragged me to some rugby club, but redeemed himself when we managed to get the pub to open upstairs for the Footie. We had the entire floor! )

I played Tennis in HS and I guess that's how I became such a big fan. I don't play much anymore but if there is a tournament on I basically watch as many games as I can catch for those two weeks. And if it's Rafael Nadal or Serena Willams playing, don't talk to me while the game is on! :)

Well, Nadal makes watching tennis interesting :D

And I must admit a fondness for Aussie rules. But it generally doesn't have alot to do with the game :)

perv :)
