This is a strange one. Feel for the Families left behind.

What gas would a fish emit to cause this result?

Rotting fish fumes kill three

THREE Thai men died when overcome by powerful fumes from rotting fish in a boat they were unloading in Malaysia's northern Perak state.

Another Thai crewman who tried to pull them to safety narrowly escaped death himself but was able to crawl out of the hold in time, Perak police official Zainuddin Yaakob told the Bernama state news agency today.

Mr Zainuddin said the four men were unloading the boat at a jetty when one of them was instructed to go into the hold which also contained rotting fish that had spoiled after the cooling system failed.

"Upon entering the hold, he must have breathed the fumes emitted by the rotting fish," he said.

When the three others realised their friend had collapsed, they rushed down to help but were themselves overcome by the stench.

The survivor, 31-year-old Yong Chai, said that the tragedy happened extremely quickly.

"When the three of us entered the boat's hold, I saw my friend lying on the floor and frothing at the mouth. Then my other friends started collapsing one after another, and lost consciousness," he said.

"When I realised I had difficulty breathing, I quickly crawled out of the hold and sought assistance from other workers."

Mr Zainuddin said all the Thais had valid work permits and travel documents, and police did not suspect foul play.

Hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide are produced by the bacteria attacking rotting fish. Normally with adequate ventilation the extreme build up should not occur. But in this case due to the sudden symptoms it would appear likely that hydrogen cyanide would be the culprit. So don't lock your missus or girl friend in the fish store. Unless you really want to that is :o

I'd bet money they used it later to make fish sauce. :D

Time on the boat goes towards the needed six months or so, they might feel. :D

Maybe even the frothing added something :o

Update:

Thai fishermen killed by poisonous gas

BANGKOK: -- Three Thai fishermen working in Malaysia have been killed by breathing in poisonous fumes from rotting fish, the Department of Fisheries has confirmed.

Mr. Jaranthada Karnasuta, the department’s Deputy Director-General, told reporters yesterday that the three Thais working in Malaysia’s Perak State had died on 6 June after being hired to remove trash fish which had been rotting in a damaged refrigeration unit for 10 days.

A fourth Thai survived the incident.

The bodies of the dead Thai men are being held in Malaysia until autopsies have been performed.
