Hi.

We're planning on driving from Khon Kaen to Nakhon Phanom. Im trying to work out how long to allow to get there....does anyone do this trip regularly and can advise?

Google maps shows about 6.5hrs....is that accurate?

Thanks.

6.5 hrs????? Are you on a Honda Wave? I have done this a lot and go Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom. I do it on a bike and have no idea how long it would take in a car? 4 hrs??? Depends on the traffic going over Phu Phan, try to avoid at night and the early morning, accidents all the place. Just count the little spirit houses at the road side.

Made several times under 4 hours in my truck. Watch it Kalisin to Sakon, dangerous road at night. Hard enough in the daytime with 100 plus switchbacks. Two night trips, no more.

Great advice....you were right, 4hrs in total (or just under).

Thanks for the tip about driving at night too. Now the next long haul Nakhon Phanom to Nong Khai!

One hour NK to Udorn, about three hours east to NKP.

A more scenic run would be to just head downstream from Nong Khai all the way. 6 hours?

FYI, haven't done either for lots and lots of years so roads might be better these days.

I would avoid the 22 going from Sakon Nakhon to Udon Thani, suicide highway, especially at weekends. The 212 following the Mekhong is a better trip, but it is longer, you don't get much of a river view and there isn't a lot to see but very peaceful and you a better chance of arriving in Nong Khai in one piece. Alternatively you could head directly NW and take the smaller 4 number roads.
