Hi guys

Just bought a new Honda click, any advice on the best and cheapest insurance company to go for...? The honda one they offered me seems to be ok for 1200 per year but just shopping around still.

Cheers

I always wonder about this too. But my Thai friends say insurance is included with when you register your motorcycle> My understanding is I receive minimum insurance when I register my motorcycle I have never bought insurance for my bike yet, just register it every year and receive new sticker I have been stopped by police and no problems. All my thai friends do the same.

The insurance you receive when registering a motorcycle only covers medical expenses.

There is a limit of 15,000 baht per claim of which in reality would only cover minor medical injuries. You could blow out 15,000 with just a few CAT scans. The excess medical cost will still be liable by the person at fault.

It certainly does not cover any damages to yours or the other motorcycle, car, bus, truck, train, army tank, drunken foreigner, etc etc etc. So if you do not have insurance, please avoid hitting anything you cannot afford to replace from your own pocket.

If you are riding correctly and paid your registration, you should not have any problems with the police as the law does not require you hold other insurance.

I was told by a motorbike shop that the minimum insurance is only liability insurance. So the 15,000 or so baht only covers expenses for someone you injured with your bike, and not your own banged up self. Suppose I should get someone to read my documents...

So what is the recommendation for full coverage on for a small bike, that will take care of damage to both parties, and reasonable medical for both parties?

May we suggest you look at the Thai Visa Insurance information and then go Here for a quotation ?

As most people I meet haven't a clue about bike insurance, much less than those who know about car insurance, you would be doing us all a favour and yourself if you could put something up for people to see.

Motorcycle insurance is very similar to motor vehicle insurance

CTPL (Compulsory) - This is the government insurance and is a minimum requirement for owning a motorcycle. The cover however is very basic and if you do have an accident then be prepared to pay. Worse still if you are involved in a serious accident then you could well end up in jail as there is no bail bond to this insurance.

1st Class : Comprehensive - Comprehensively covering the motorcycle insured, life and injury of driver, passenger and third party property damage and liability.

2nd Class : Third Party Liability with Fire and Theft - Covering life and injury of driver, passenger, third party property damage and liability PLUS a 200,000 Baht Bail Bond as well as theft and fire damage.

3rd Class : Third Party Liability - Covering life and injury of driver, passenger and third party property damage and liability. PLUS a 200,000 Baht Bail Bond.

Motor Bike Insurance in Thailand is basic to say the least but required by law. It should be pointed out that 1 in 25 motor bikes on the road in Thailand have been registered and insured according to the Thailand Transportation Department in 2008. For a Honda Click it will be just the basic coverage required by law 200-400 Baht premium per year cost available when you go to register your bike and again you can pay each year when you go to pay your road tax. Trying to get full coverage will be extremely difficult since every insurance policy Health/life /Accident in Thailand has Motor Bike exclusions or reductions if you are injured on a Bike as driver/passenger

There is no 1st or 2nd class for small under 250cc Motor Bikes only 3rd class

To protect theft and own damage Not Possible

To protect against injury to others Not Possible bare minimum

Bikes are stolen and damaged every single minute of every day in Thailand and no insurance company would ever stay in business if they had a real 1st class policy here.

We are sorry to say but you are quite wrong. We at Thai Visa insurance brokers can insure all sizes of motorbikes & scooters from the small Clicks and the like to the biggest H.D.s - all 1st Class, 2nd Class or 3rd Class depending on the owners requirements.

We agree many dozens of bikes are stolen every day but fortunately for the insurance companies very few are insured as the owners always think it will happen to someone else.

So, anyone with any size bike requiring comprehensive cover or just Third Party, Fire & Theft please go Here for a quote.

BUT if the bike is older than 10 years you can't insure 1st or 2nd class. Well that's what you told me last year.

Can't insure old cars either - had to buy a new one :)
