Unfortunately for your friend, he will find it almost impossible to be employed by a Thai company as an electrician (rules).

The only other way is to start his own electrical business, which requires a thorough knowledge of the 'business requirements' of foreigners.

If somebody chooses to carry out 'illegal' electrical work, the risks are tremendous:

1] Working without a work permit & appropriate visa carries a harsh penalty (possible prison sentence).

2] Electrical work is inherently dangerous & as such, a very good understanding of the Thai electrical system is strongly advised. If a 'client' is injured or killed as a result of any electrical work, it will be essential that all of the required permits etc have previously been issued to the foreigner. If this is adhered to, a resultant injury or death from faulty electrical work (if proven guilty), may attract a slightly smaller prison sentence & fine as compared to 'illegal' work (TIT?).

3] Understanding 'Electrical Standards' form a key part of 'getting it right' in Thailand. What Thailand doesn't need is several different 'Standards' applied inappropriately.
