Making smokers pay: BMA considering Bt2 tax on cigarettes

BANGKOK: -- Cigarette smokers in Bangkok may have to pay Bt2 more per pack due to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s plans to levy a tax on cigarettes.

Deputy Bangkok governor Panit Wikitset said that the BMA required more income for its development plan and was seeking approval to charge additional taxes on cigarettes, hotel stays, and oil.

The BMA is the only local organisation that has not levied a tax on cigarettes and, as a result, a pack of cigarettes in the provinces is about Bt2 more expensive than in Bangkok, Panit said.
