Well the European court sold us down the river when they ruled that the UK Government's practice of freeezing basic pensions for ex-pats who live in certain countries (but not for all!) was not against the ex-pats' human rights.

So pensioners living in USA get annual increases but across the border in Commonwealth Canada they don't; neither in Australia but do in Serbia and EEC - logical??

We all paid our NI contributions etc and it would cost less than the average £7,000 p.a. expenditure on UK resident pensioners to pay us (about £1,000 p.a.). After all we get no free health care incl prescriptions, no free eye tests, no free bus travel, no winter fuel allowance (I used mine for air con before I declared I had left!). There are ex-pats 'living' on £50 per week in some places.

If you look at pension-parity-uk.com you'll find the new petition that is being sent to all elected representatives; get signing - it coul :) d be you - it's certainly me!

You're right; it's all too divisive. They should scrap the old age pension. There's no pot to pay it from, so why should today's wage-slaves toil to keep crumblies in luxury in the sun when said crumblies should have saved to support themselves in their old age

Of course they were under the impression that all those taxes / NI that was being paid over the years is what would provide them with a pension after retirement.

Maybe one day several million expats will move back to the UK within a very short time frame and all fully claim whatever they are entitled to, this would make the Government think twice. Then again there is about to be a change of government, I wonder if this will make any difference whatsoever. Somehow I doubt it.

Should've paid more attention to what your government was doing with your taxes and NI at the time, then. I'm, afraid it all got squandered on nationalised industries, hospitals, armed forces, dole and so forth. I'm not sure, but I'd not be surprised but MPs pensions are fully funded, though...

Sounds like your drunk again chum.

If l could at this moment of time l would knock you out. My dad was called upon to kill for our country, never earned enough to pay into a 'private' scheme so where does that leave him in your eye's eh. You one of those loads of money blokes or has a job, does sod all, but your employer pays into something for you. Look at the bigger picture for the old, the people who suffered so you can live in a free society and not just think of yourself. aaaaaaaah. Pratt.

I guess your father's a lot luckier than his father, then; particularly since he lived to pensionable age - not so many of your grandfather's generation would have.

Do you reckon that the pension should be linked to your service career? That seems quite sensible to me; when forces of might were called for, in hard times, they could be mobilised, knowing that the bulk of expense would be met after the crisis was over - effectively comparable to a war bond, but with the capital provided in the form of human effort, and the coupon paid on the member's old age.

This 'll probably upset you even more. Pratt is a surname. Prat is a word for arse I think, which could be used as a term of abuse.

All those in favour of funded pensions say "frugal"

All those in favour of unfunded pensions say "please"

Not only has the topic gone off the rails but it has nothing or little to do with Thailand.
